The history of Stellantis is the history of two major automotive groups that merged in 2021.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was itself the product of multiple mergers and acquisitions. Fiat, founded in Turin, Italy in 1899, became one of Europe's largest automakers over the 20th century. Chrysler, founded in the United States in 1925, was one of the "Big Three" American automakers. Fiat acquired a controlling stake in Chrysler in 2009, when Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy during the global financial crisis, and completed the full acquisition in 2014, forming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
Groupe PSA, founded in France in 1810 as a tools manufacturer before entering the automotive business in the early 20th century, operated the Peugeot, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel, and Vauxhall brands. PSA acquired Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors in 2017 for approximately €1.3 billion.
The merger of FCA and Groupe PSA was announced in December 2019 and completed in January 2021, creating Stellantis. Carlos Tavares, who had led Groupe PSA, became CEO of the combined company.
Under Tavares, Stellantis pursued aggressive cost reduction and profitability improvement, achieving record profits in 2022 and 2023. However, the company's performance deteriorated significantly in 2024, with net revenues declining 17% to €156.9 billion, as Stellantis faced inventory buildup, pricing pressure, and competitive challenges particularly in North America.
Carlos Tavares resigned as CEO on December 1, 2024, citing strategic disagreements with the board. John Elkann, chairman of Stellantis and CEO of Exor (the Agnelli family holding company), assumed interim executive responsibilities. Antonio Filosa, former CEO of Jeep, was appointed permanent CEO effective June 23, 2025.
