30 Brands You Think Are American But Aren't
Budweiser is Belgian-Brazilian. Purina is Swiss. Firestone is Japanese. Here are 30 brands that feel deeply American but are owned by foreign corporations.
Walk through any American supermarket, hardware store, or gas station and you are surrounded by brands that feel unmistakably American. Names that appear in Fourth of July ads. Brands that sponsor NASCAR. Products associated with baseball, diners, and the open road.
Many of them are owned by companies headquartered in Belgium, Switzerland, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.
Foreign ownership of American consumer brands has accelerated over the past three decades as global corporations acquired U.S. businesses to access the world's largest consumer market. The brands themselves changed little: the packaging stayed the same, the factories often remained in the same states, and the marketing continued to emphasize American heritage. What changed was where the profits flowed.
This is not a criticism of foreign ownership. A Belgian-Brazilian company can make perfectly good beer. A Swiss conglomerate can manufacture excellent pet food. But consumers who care about where their spending ultimately ends up deserve accurate information about who actually controls these brands.
Here are 30 brands that feel American but are owned by foreign parent companies.
Food and Beverage
1. Budweiser Budweiser is the self-proclaimed "King of Beers" and has been a symbol of American culture since Adolphus Busch developed the brand in St. Louis in 1876. Since 2008, it has been owned by AB InBev, a company headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, formed through the merger of Belgian brewer InBev and American brewer Anheuser-Busch. AB InBev is listed on the Euronext Brussels exchange under the ticker ABI. The Budweiser brand is licensed in the United States; AB InBev owns the American Budweiser trademark.
2. Bud Light Bud Light is the best-selling beer in the United States by volume. Like Budweiser, it is owned by AB InBev and is brewed in American facilities under the Belgian-Brazilian parent company's management.
3. Pure Leaf Tea Pure Leaf is a premium iced tea brand sold throughout the United States. It is owned by a joint venture between PepsiCo and Unilever, the British-Dutch multinational. Unilever holds the tea brand assets through its Lipton tea portfolio, which it subsequently sold to a private equity consortium in 2022, though Pure Leaf remains co-branded.
4. Purina Purina produces some of the most widely purchased pet food brands in the United States, including Purina ONE, Pro Plan, and Fancy Feast. Purina was acquired by Nestlé, the Swiss food conglomerate headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, in 2001 for approximately $10.3 billion. Nestlé Purina Petcare operates with significant autonomy but is wholly owned by the Swiss parent.
5. DiGiorno DiGiorno is the leading frozen pizza brand in the United States with the tagline "It's not delivery, it's DiGiorno." It is owned by Nestlé USA, a subsidiary of the Swiss corporation. Nestlé acquired DiGiorno as part of its purchase of Kraft's North American frozen pizza business for $3.7 billion in 2010.
6. Stouffer's Stouffer's frozen meals, a staple of American family dinners since the 1950s, are also owned by Nestlé. Nestlé acquired the Stouffer Corporation in 1973. The brand has operated under Swiss ownership for over five decades while maintaining its American comfort food positioning.
7. Lean Cuisine Lean Cuisine, the frozen diet meal brand, is another Nestlé property in the United States. The brand was created in 1981 and has been under Nestlé ownership for decades.
Personal Care and Household
8. Vaseline Vaseline was invented in the United States in 1859 by Robert Chesebrough in Brooklyn, New York. It is now owned by Unilever, the British-Dutch consumer goods company. Unilever acquired the brand through its purchase of Chesebrough-Pond's in 1987.
9. Q-tips Q-tips cotton swabs, invented in the United States in the 1920s, are owned by Unilever. The brand is one of the most recognized household names in America, but profits flow to Unilever's Anglo-Dutch parent structure.
10. Dove Dove soap and personal care products were developed by Lever Brothers and acquired by Unilever in 1957. While Dove is a global brand, many Americans associate it primarily with the U.S. market given its prominent "Real Beauty" campaign. Unilever is headquartered in London, United Kingdom.
11. Hellmann's Hellmann's mayonnaise has been sold under the Hellmann's name in the eastern United States since 1913. It is owned by Unilever. In the western United States, the same product is sold under the Best Foods name, also owned by Unilever.
12. Popsicle Popsicle, the frozen treat brand that has been part of American summers since 1923, is owned by Unilever through its Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream subsidiary. Unilever is the parent company of several American ice cream brands that consumers often assume are domestic operations.
Automotive and Industrial
13. Firestone Firestone tires were founded in Akron, Ohio in 1900 by Harvey Firestone, who became a close friend of Henry Ford and supplied tires for the Model T. Firestone was acquired by Bridgestone Corporation, a Japanese tire manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, in 1988 for approximately $2.6 billion. The Firestone name and Akron heritage remain prominent in American motorsports sponsorship, but the parent company is Japanese.
14. FRAM FRAM automotive filters are a familiar sight in American auto parts stores. The brand is owned by Mann+Hummel, a German filtration technology company headquartered in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
Retail and Hospitality
15. Holiday Inn Holiday Inn was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952 by Kemmons Wilson as an affordable American family motel chain. It is now owned by IHG Hotels and Resorts, an British hospitality company headquartered in Windsor, England, and listed on the London Stock Exchange. IHG owns the Holiday Inn brand globally.
16. 7-Eleven 7-Eleven is the largest convenience store chain in the United States, with over 13,000 U.S. locations. The chain was founded in Dallas, Texas in 1927. Since 1991, 7-Eleven has been owned by Seven and I Holdings, a Japanese retail conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo. The company became a wholly owned subsidiary in 2005.
17. Motel 6 Motel 6 was founded in Santa Barbara, California in 1962, named for its original $6 nightly rate. It is now owned by Accor, a French hospitality company headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, and listed on Euronext Paris.
18. Alamo Rent a Car Alamo Rent a Car is a major American car rental brand. It is owned by Enterprise Holdings, which is a private company. However, Alamo's corporate parent structure has shifted over the years, and the brand competes directly with National, also owned by Enterprise Holdings. Enterprise Holdings is privately held by the Taylor family, making it an exception on this list as a genuinely American-owned operation, though its National and Alamo brands are often assumed to be independent American companies.
Technology and Electronics
19. Motorola Motorola was founded in Schaumburg, Illinois in 1928 and became an American technology icon through innovations in radio communications, military equipment, and mobile phones. The consumer mobile brand is now owned by Lenovo, a Chinese technology company headquartered in Beijing. Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014 for approximately $2.91 billion.
20. RCA RCA (Radio Corporation of America) was one of the most significant American technology brands of the 20th century. The RCA brand name for consumer electronics is now owned by Sony in certain categories and licensed to various manufacturers through trademark arrangements. The brand's American heritage is used extensively in marketing, though no American entity controls the RCA trademark for major consumer electronics categories.
Fashion and Apparel
21. Tommy Hilfiger Tommy Hilfiger was founded by the American designer of the same name in New York City in 1985 and built a distinctly American preppy aesthetic. The brand is now owned by PVH Corp, which is American-listed, but PVH sold Tommy Hilfiger internationally and the global operations are managed through Apax Partners, a London-based private equity firm that previously owned a majority stake. As of 2026, PVH Corp, listed on the NYSE under PVH, retains full ownership of Tommy Hilfiger globally, making this one of the few brands on this list with a U.S.-listed parent, though its operational headquarters for many markets is in Amsterdam.
22. Calvin Klein Calvin Klein was founded in New York City by the American designer Calvin Klein in 1968. Like Tommy Hilfiger, it is now owned by PVH Corp (NYSE: PVH), which acquired Calvin Klein in 2003 for approximately $430 million. PVH is an American-listed corporation, though its operational strategy is managed with significant European presence.
23. Reebok Reebok was founded in Bolton, England in 1958 and acquired by Adidas in 2006. Many Americans associate Reebok with American sports culture, particularly through its NBA and NFL partnerships. As of 2022, Reebok is owned by Authentic Brands Group, which is a U.S.-based company, though ABG's financing involves significant international institutional capital. ABG is backed by investors including BlackRock, General Atlantic, and sovereign wealth funds.
Media and Entertainment
24. Rolling Stone Rolling Stone magazine was founded in San Francisco in 1967 and became the defining publication of American rock music culture. The magazine is now owned by Penske Media Corporation, a U.S. company that acquired a majority stake in 2017. However, the original founder Jann Wenner retained equity and the brand has complex ownership. For a parallel example: Sports Illustrated is owned by Authentic Brands Group, which licenses the name to independent publishers.
25. Jeep Jeep originated from the American military vehicle of World War II and became a symbol of American ruggedness and outdoor culture. Since 2014, Jeep has been owned by Stellantis, an international automotive group formed through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Italian-American) and PSA Group (French). Stellantis is listed on the NYSE, Euronext Milan, and Euronext Paris. While it has an American listing, its headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Food Service
26. Dunkin' Dunkin' (formerly Dunkin' Donuts) was founded in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950 and is associated with New England working-class culture. As of 2020, Dunkin' is owned by Inspire Brands, a U.S.-based private equity-backed restaurant group. Inspire Brands is backed by Roark Capital Group, an Atlanta-based private equity firm. This is another genuinely American-owned example, included here because consumers often assume franchise-operated chains are independently operated.
27. Burger King Burger King was founded in Miami, Florida in 1953 and is the second-largest fast-food hamburger chain in the United States. As of 2014, Burger King has been owned by Restaurant Brands International (NYSE/TSX: QSR), a company headquartered in Toronto, Canada. RBI also owns Tim Hortons and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.
28. Krispy Kreme Krispy Kreme was founded in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1937 and became an iconic American donut brand. From 2016 to 2021, Krispy Kreme was owned by JAB Holding Company, a German private investment firm controlled by the Reimann family. JAB took Krispy Kreme public in 2021 on the Nasdaq. As of 2025, McDonald's has acquired a significant stake in Krispy Kreme through a distribution partnership that includes an equity component.
Other Consumer Brands
29. Frigidaire Frigidaire appliances were invented in the United States and produced by General Motors before being sold. The brand is now owned by Electrolux, a Swedish home appliance company headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
30. Pennzoil Pennzoil motor oil was a quintessential American oil brand associated with motorsports sponsorship. It is now owned by Shell, the British-Dutch multinational energy company. Shell acquired Pennzoil through its purchase of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company in 2002 for approximately $1.8 billion.
Why This Matters to Consumers
Foreign ownership does not automatically mean lower quality, reduced American employment, or diminished consumer value. Many of the companies listed above manufacture products in U.S. facilities, employ tens of thousands of American workers, and pay U.S. federal and state taxes through their American subsidiaries.
What changes is where ultimate corporate control, long-term strategic decisions, and profit distributions are concentrated. Consumers who want to direct their spending toward American-owned businesses, for whatever personal reasons, need accurate information to make those choices.
