History of Mercedes-Benz E-Class

  • Founded: 1993
  • Founders: Mercedes-Benz Group (internal development)

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class was first introduced in 1993 with the W124 generation. The "E" designation had been used internally by Mercedes-Benz since the 1950s to identify vehicles with fuel injection (Einspritzmotor) engines. The E-Class designation officially consolidated various mid-size model lines that had previously been sold under different names, creating a clear product hierarchy within Mercedes-Benz's lineup.

The W124 generation (1993-1996) established the E-Class as a leader in safety and comfort. The W210 generation (1995-2002) introduced the distinctive "four-eyed" headlight design and was the first production car to feature Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment, a safety system that later became mandatory on all vehicles.

The W211 generation (2002-2009) introduced the PRE-SAFE safety system, which could detect an impending collision and prepare the vehicle and occupants for impact. The W212 generation (2009-2016) featured more modern styling and continued advancing safety technology with improved driver assistance systems.

The W213 generation (2016-2023) focused on semi-autonomous driving capabilities, digital connectivity, and hybrid powertrains. The W213 introduced Mercedes-Benz's Drive Pilot system, offering Level 2 autonomous driving features. The W213 also added a new straight-six inline-6 engine with EQ Boost mild hybrid technology.

The current W214 generation was launched in 2023 as a sedan, with the wagon variant following in 2024. The W214 represents a significant technological leap, featuring the MB.OS operating system, over-the-air updates, and a third-generation MBUX infotainment system with a Superscreen option spanning the dashboard. The W214 is available with mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel powertrains. The E-Class coupe and convertible were spun off into the new CLE nameplate for 2024, replacing the previous E-Class two-door variants.

Throughout its history, the E-Class has introduced numerous safety innovations that later became industry standards, including ESP (1995), PRE-SAFE (2002), Attention Assist drowsiness detection (2009), and advanced driver assistance systems. The E-Class has been consistently recognized for its combination of luxury, safety, and engineering quality.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sustainability & Ethics

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class operates under Mercedes-Benz Group's corporate sustainability framework. Mercedes-Benz has committed to achieving carbon neutrality across its entire product portfolio by 2039, with interim targets for reducing carbon emissions from manufacturing operations.

The Sindelfingen plant, a primary E-Class production facility, operates with renewable energy sources and implements closed-loop recycling systems for manufacturing materials. Mercedes-Benz's Factory 56 at Sindelfingen, opened in 2020, is one of the most environmentally advanced automotive production facilities in the world, with solar panels, rainwater collection, and energy-efficient construction.

The E-Class is available with plug-in hybrid powertrains that offer up to 100 kilometers of electric-only range, reducing fuel consumption and emissions for daily commuting. Mercedes-Benz also offers the EQE as the fully electric alternative to the E-Class, though both are sold alongside each other.

Mercedes-Benz operates vehicle recycling programs that ensure end-of-life E-Class vehicles are processed in an environmentally responsible manner. The company's design-for-recycling approach considers the entire vehicle lifecycle, from material selection to manufacturing processes and end-of-life recycling.

On ethical practices, Mercedes-Benz Group publishes annual sustainability reports covering supply chain transparency, human rights, and environmental standards. The company has committed to responsible sourcing of raw materials, particularly for battery production in electric and hybrid vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is a member of the Responsible Cobalt Initiative and the Global Battery Alliance.

Mercedes-Benz Group is not a B Corporation. The company's sustainability reporting follows European Union Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements and is audited by third parties.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Recalls & Controversies

Takata Airbag Recalls: Like many automotive manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz has faced airbag-related recalls affecting various E-Class models. These recalls are part of the broader industry action related to Takata airbag inflators, which can rupture and deploy metal fragments into the cabin. Mercedes-Benz has issued recalls for E-Class models from the W212 generation equipped with Takata airbags. Owners can check recall status through the NHTSA website or Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

Software and Electronics Recalls: The E-Class's advanced technology systems have occasionally faced software-related recalls. The W213 generation experienced recalls related to the infotainment system, driver assistance programming, and electronic control modules. The W214 generation has had over-the-air software updates to address issues without requiring dealership visits, reflecting the evolution of automotive software management.

Diesel Emissions Scrutiny: Mercedes-Benz, like other German automakers, has faced scrutiny regarding diesel emissions compliance. The German government investigated Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles for potential emissions software that could disable emissions controls under certain conditions. While primarily affecting diesel models, these industry-wide controversies have impacted the perception of German automotive engineering. Mercedes-Benz has denied using illegal defeat devices and has cooperated with regulatory investigations.

Fuel System Recalls: Some E-Class models have been subject to fuel system-related recalls, including fuel pump replacements and fuel line issues. These recalls have been addressed through service campaigns at Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

Brake System Issues: Certain E-Class generations have faced brake system-related recalls, particularly affecting electronic brake control modules and brake booster systems. Mercedes-Benz has addressed these through manufacturer service campaigns.

Supply Chain and Production Delays: The E-Class has been affected by global supply chain disruptions, particularly the semiconductor shortage that impacted automotive production from 2021 to 2023. These disruptions led to delivery delays and temporary feature deletions on some models, affecting customer satisfaction.
