History of Cape Advanced Vehicles

  • Founded: 1999
  • Founders: Cape Advanced Vehicles (internal development)

Cape Advanced Vehicles was founded in Cape Town in 1999 to produce Ford GT40 replicas in South Africa. The company's name honours Ford Advanced Vehicles, the manufacturer of the original GT40 racing cars founded in 1963. South Africa had already developed a small but respected cottage industry of specialist car builders, and CAV became the country's best-known entrant in the GT40 replica world.

Through the 2000s the company built a steady reputation for faithful GT40 recreations. Early cars stuck close to the original formula: a mid-mounted Ford V8, period-correct styling, and construction aimed at customers who wanted the look and feel of the 1960s endurance racer. CAV produced both roller cars, delivered without engine and gearbox for owners to finish, and turn-key cars built complete in-house.

The pivotal change came in 2013 when Jordi Reddy took over the company. Under his leadership CAV shifted its focus from straight replicas toward what the industry calls restomods: cars that preserve the GT40's shape and character while adding modern engineering, drivability, and comfort. The goal, as Reddy has framed it, is to build the best modern interpretation of the GT40 rather than a museum-grade copy.

In 2016 CAV moved into its current Cape Town facility, bringing design, body and component manufacturing, paintwork, and final assembly under one roof. The vertical integration matters at this end of the market, because customers are buying a handbuilt car where panel fit and paint quality are part of the product.

The company's signature engineering choice is its stainless steel monocoque chassis. CAV is the only GT40 replica builder using a stainless monocoque rather than the fiberglass-tub or steel-tube alternatives common among competitors, and the design delivers extra rigidity plus room for drivers up to about 6 feet 4 inches. Powertrain options have included a classic Ford small-block V8 with Holley or Weber carburetors producing roughly 450 horsepower, and the modern Gen 2 Ford 5.0-liter Coyote V8 at about 435 horsepower.

By the mid-2020s CAV had built more than 220 cars. To mark 60 years since the GT40's famous 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, the company unveiled the GT MKII, a flagship restomod limited to 40 cars. The MKII takes the restomod approach further, pairing the classic silhouette with more aggressive modern engineering and positioning CAV less as a replica maker and more as a boutique supercar manufacturer.

About Cape Advanced Vehicles (Pty) Ltd

What kind of company is Cape Advanced Vehicles?

Cape Advanced Vehicles is a private boutique automotive manufacturer based in Cape Town, South Africa. It builds GT40-style restomods and limited-edition supercars in low volume, selling both turn-key cars and rollers directly to customers around the world.

Is Cape Advanced Vehicles publicly traded?

No. The company is privately held with no stock exchange listing. It is a small specialist manufacturer and does not publish financial results.

When was Cape Advanced Vehicles founded?

The company was founded in 1999 in Cape Town to produce Ford GT40 replicas. Jordi Reddy took over in 2013 and repositioned it as a restomod builder. It unveiled the GT MKII limited edition in the mid-2020s.

Who leads Cape Advanced Vehicles?

Jordi Reddy has run the company since 2013 as Director and Product Architect and chief executive. He is responsible for the restomod strategy, the stainless steel monocoque direction, and the GT MKII program.

What is Cape Advanced Vehicles' market position?

CAV is a premium niche manufacturer in the continuation and restomod segment. It competes with Superformance and specialist British GT40 builders, differentiating through its stainless monocoque, Gulf Oil license, and modern drivability focus.

Does Ford own or endorse Cape Advanced Vehicles?

No. CAV has no ownership or endorsement relationship with Ford Motor Company or Shelby American and says so explicitly in its own materials. The name references Ford Advanced Vehicles, the 1963 original GT40 manufacturer, as a tribute only.

Cape Advanced Vehicles Recalls & Controversies

CAV has no documented product safety recalls in major regulatory databases, which is typical for a low-volume specialist manufacturer whose cars are often sold as rollers or registered under kit and replica vehicle rules in export markets.

The more relevant issue is trademark exposure. The GT40 name and body shape carry intellectual property questions that have tripped up replica builders before, including a past US dispute in which Ford challenged a replica maker's rights. CAV manages this by disclaiming any Ford or Shelby affiliation and by licensing the Gulf livery properly. No litigation between CAV and Ford has been publicly documented as of October 2026.

Cape Advanced Vehicles Ownership: Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • +Independent structure allows fast product decisions without group approval layers
  • +Direct founder-style leadership under Jordi Reddy keeps engineering and product vision aligned
  • +No corporate parent means the brand's identity is fully controlled in Cape Town
  • +In-house manufacturing supports quality control over low-volume builds
  • +Gulf Oil license provides a sanctioned, recognizable signature livery

Considerations

  • -Small scale limits production capacity and increases delivery lead times
  • -No access to a large automaker's R&D, dealer, or service network
  • -Brand equity depends heavily on one product family and a small leadership team
  • -Customers bear more after-sales risk than with an established OEM
  • -Trademark exposure around GT40-derived designs remains an ongoing structural risk
