History of Jaguar
- Founded: 1922
- Founders: William Lyons, William Walmsley
- Acquired by Tata Group: 2008
William Lyons and William Walmsley founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922. The business initially made motorcycle sidecars. In the late 1920s, Lyons began building attractive coachwork bodies on standard car chassis, most famously on the Austin Seven. These became known as SS Cars.
The SS Cars name was rebranded to Jaguar Cars in 1945, following World War II. The name change was partly driven by the association of the initials SS with the Nazi Schutzstaffel. The Jaguar name had already been used on some SS Cars models before the war.
The postwar Jaguar quickly established a reputation for combining performance with beauty at relatively accessible prices compared to its Continental rivals. The XK120, launched in 1948, was the fastest production car in the world at the time with a top speed of 120 miles per hour. The C-Type and D-Type racing cars won Le Mans five times between 1951 and 1957. The E-Type, introduced in 1961, was described by Enzo Ferrari as "the most beautiful car ever made." It is now a permanent exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The Jaguar XJ saloon, introduced in 1968, became the company's flagship sedan and remained in various forms in production through 2019. The car was designed by William Lyons himself and was the final car bearing his personal design influence; he retired in 1972.
Jaguar struggled financially through the 1970s as part of the nationalized British Leyland Motor Corporation. It was separated from BL and relisted as an independent public company in 1984. Ford acquired it in 1990 for 1.6 billion pounds, then the largest sum ever paid for a car company. Ford invested in the brand but Jaguar remained difficult to make profitable, in part because of quality perception issues relative to German competitors and insufficient volume to achieve scale.
Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors in 2008 for approximately 2.3 billion US dollars. Under Tata, JLR invested heavily in the Land Rover side of the business with the Range Rover, Defender relaunch, and Evoque. Jaguar received the F-Type sports car in 2013, a well-received update to the XF and XJ sedans, and the F-Pace SUV in 2016.
In late 2024, Jaguar announced a comprehensive rebrand. The brand withdrew all legacy model advertising, unveiled a new visual identity, and announced it would stop producing combustion-engine vehicles as it transitions to an all-electric lineup. The first new fully electric Jaguar model, the GT (a large electric grand tourer), is planned for production in 2025, with deliveries in 2026. The new models will be priced higher than current Jaguar vehicles, repositioning the brand upmarket to compete with Porsche, Ferrari, and Bentley rather than BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Jaguar Sustainability & Ethics
JLR's Reimagine strategy commits Jaguar specifically to becoming an all-electric brand. The brand discontinued combustion engine vehicle sales as of 2025 as it transitions to the new lineup. JLR has committed to net carbon zero across its supply chain, products, and operations by 2039. Jaguar's first electric models will be produced without combustion engines, which will reduce tailpipe emissions to zero.
JLR publishes annual sustainability reports and participates in the Science Based Targets initiative. No Leaping Bunny, PETA, Vegan Society, or B Corp certification applies to Jaguar.
Awards & Recognition
The Jaguar E-Type is a permanent exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one of only three automobiles in the MOMA design collection. The original was donated to the collection in 1996. The E-Type was named the most beautiful car of all time by several automotive publications in surveys of designers and engineers.
The Jaguar F-Type received numerous sports car awards on its launch in 2013, including Car of the Year recognition from multiple publications in the UK and North America. The I-Pace, Jaguar's first electric vehicle, won the World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car awards in 2019, the first vehicle to win three World Car Awards categories simultaneously.
Jaguar Recalls & Controversies
Jaguar has faced reliability challenges relative to its German premium competitors. JD Power and Consumer Reports surveys have historically rated Jaguar below BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi for dependability and quality. These issues have been cited as a factor limiting Jaguar's market share growth despite positive reviews for the vehicles' driving dynamics.
The November 2024 rebrand campaign generated controversy when an advertising video featuring diverse models in brightly colored clothes with no visible car was widely mocked online. The campaign was defended by JLR's CMO Rawdon Glover, who stated that Jaguar needed to "copy nothing" and create distance from its competitors. Elon Musk commented critically on the campaign, generating additional publicity. The new GT model reveal in December 2024 partially restored credibility with automotive media.
JLR settled a dispute with US Jaguar dealers in 2023 related to vehicle availability and margin practices. Settlement terms were not publicly disclosed.

Jaguar Ownership: Pros & Cons
Advantages
- +Tata Motors' long-term ownership has provided capital for the full rebrand and electrification transition without pressure for short-term results
- +The all-electric repositioning, if successful, would substantially increase Jaguar's average transaction price and margin
- +JLR's FY2024 profitability gives the company financial headroom to fund Jaguar's transformation
- +The E-Type, I-Pace award wins, and F-Type provide credible design and engineering heritage for the new direction
- +Tata ownership has maintained UK manufacturing and employment, avoiding the political and reputational risk of offshoring
Considerations
- -The 2024 rebrand was widely criticized and created uncertainty about whether the new positioning will succeed
- -Jaguar's volume will likely be much lower than previously at higher price points, meaning any missteps with the new GT model have outsized financial consequences
- -Competition at the 100,000-plus pound price point is fierce and dominated by brands with much longer heritage at that level
- -Consumer adoption of premium and luxury electric vehicles is slower than expected across the industry
- -The transition period, during which combustion models have been discontinued and electric models have not yet launched at scale, creates a revenue gap
