Watch Brand Ownership: From Swatch to Rolex

Your Omega watch and your Tissot watch are made by the same company. Your Cartier watch and your IWC watch share a parent. Your TAG Heuer and your Hublot are siblings. Swiss watchmaking looks like a diverse industry of independent artisans. It is not. Three corporate groups control the vast majority of Swiss watch production, and a handful of independent family-owned brands take the rest.

The Swiss watch industry exported CHF 25.6 billion in watches in 2025, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. That figure declined 1.7% from 2024, but the top brands gained market share. We mapped the ownership of every major Swiss watch brand to show you exactly who controls what.

The Three Groups: Swatch, Richemont, LVMH

Swiss watchmaking is dominated by three corporate groups:

Group2025 RevenueKey BrandsStructure
Swatch GroupCHF 6.28BOmega, Tissot, Longines, BreguetPublic (SIX: UHR)
Richemont€22.4B (total)Cartier, IWC, Vacheron ConstantinPublic (SIX: CFR)
LVMHWatches & Jewelry divisionTAG Heuer, Hublot, Bulgari, ZenithPublic (EPA: MC)

Together, these three groups account for roughly 55% of Swiss watch industry sales by value. The remaining 45% is split between independent family-owned brands (Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet) and smaller independent manufacturers.

The Morgan Stanley/LuxeConsult "Swiss Watcher" report for 2025 found that the four largest privately-owned Swiss brands (Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille) reached a combined 49% market share in 2025, up from 37% in 2019. Just four brands (Rolex, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, and Omega) are responsible for about 55% of industry sales.

Swatch Group: The Volume Leader

Swatch Group AG, listed on the Swiss Exchange under the ticker UHR, is the largest watch manufacturer by volume. Founded in 1983 through the merger of ASUAG and SSIH (which included Omega and Tissot), Swatch Group was engineered by Nicolas Hayek to save the Swiss watch industry from the quartz crisis.

Swatch Group's 2025 revenue was CHF 6.28 billion, down 5.9% from 2024. Net income plunged 88.6% to CHF 25 million. The company maintained production capacity and jobs during the downturn without asking for government subsidies, which compressed margins. Operating profit fell to CHF 135 million, less than half of 2024's figure.

The group's brand portfolio covers every price tier:

Omega is Swatch Group's flagship brand, but it lost market share in 2025. According to the Morgan Stanley report, Omega slipped from the third-ranked brand by sales to fifth, as Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe moved up. Longines fell out of the "Billionaires Club" (brands with over CHF 1 billion in sales), with revenue falling 18% to approximately CHF 920 million.

Swatch Group disputes the Morgan Stanley estimates. A company spokesperson said the report contains "wrong estimations, assumptions, data, figures, and statements." Swatch Group claims it outpaced Swiss watch export figures, down 1.3% by value compared to the overall market decline of 1.7%, and that sales grew 4.7% at constant currency in the second half of 2025.

Richemont: The Luxury Specialist

Richemont (SIX: CFR) is the world's second-largest luxury goods group. Founded in 1988 by South African billionaire Johann Rupert, Richemont is headquartered in Bellevue, Switzerland. The company reported sales of €22.4 billion for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, up 5% at actual exchange rates and 11% at constant rates.

Richemont operates in three business areas. The Jewellery Maisons (Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Vhernier) generated €16.5 billion. The Specialist Watchmakers reported €3.1 billion. The "Other" business area, including Fashion & Accessories and Montblanc, reached €2.7 billion.

Baume & Mercier1830Accessible luxury

On 22 January 2026, Richemont announced an agreement to sell Baume & Mercier to the Damiani Group, an Italian luxury jewelry company. The transaction is expected to close in summer 2026. Richemont believes Baume & Mercier's potential will be better realised under Damiani's ownership, given the brand's strong Italian footprint and multi-brand wholesale distribution model.

The Specialist Watchmakers division had a difficult year. Sales were down 4% at actual exchange rates, though up modestly at constant rates. The operating result was €107 million, impacted by macroeconomic headwinds including higher gold prices and unfavourable currency movements. However, sequential improvement in the second half was visible, particularly at A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Vacheron Constantin.

Cartier is the standout performer in Richemont's portfolio. While technically a jewellery Maison, Cartier's watch division is one of the largest in Switzerland. The Morgan Stanley report noted that Cartier is "a highly notable exception as part of a publicly listed luxury group" and does "extraordinary work keeping things balanced and at an accessible price." LVMH: The Challenger in Watches

LVMH (EPA: MC) is the world's largest luxury goods group, but watches are a smaller part of its portfolio compared to fashion and spirits. LVMH's Watches and Jewelry division includes TAG Heuer, Hublot, Zenith, and Bulgari, along with jewelry brands Tiffany & Co., Chaumet, and Fred.

LVMH does not break out watch-specific revenue, but the Watches and Jewelry division is one of the smaller segments in the group. TAG Heuer is the largest watch brand in LVMH's portfolio, focusing on chronographs and motorsport partnerships. In 2026, TAG Heuer is focusing on its Monaco and Carrera collections and opening a new case-making facility in Cornol, Switzerland.

Hublot is positioned as the "art of fusion" brand, combining unconventional materials like carbon fiber, ceramic, and sapphire with traditional watchmaking. Hublot will celebrate its partnership with UEFA at the Champions League final in 2026.

Zenith is known for its El Primero chronograph movement, launched in 1969 as one of the first automatic chronograph movements. The brand is bringing innovations to its Chronomaster and G.F.J. lines in 2026.

Bulgari is primarily a jewelry brand but has built a significant watch business. The Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon, presented at Watches and Wonders, set a new record for the world's thinnest tourbillon watch. The Independents: Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet

Not every major Swiss watch brand belongs to a corporate group. Three brands remain independent and family-owned, and they are gaining market share.

Rolex. Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, a charitable trust. Rolex does not publish financial results, but the Morgan Stanley report estimates it is the largest Swiss watch brand by revenue. Rolex gained market share in 2025, along with its sister brand Tudor (which grew 2% to approximately CHF 460 million). Rolex's estimated annual revenue is over CHF 10 billion.

Patek Philippe. Founded in 1839, Patek Philippe is owned by the Stern family. The brand produces approximately 60,000 watches per year and is known for its grand complications. Patek Philippe moved up the brand rankings in 2025, passing Omega to become the fourth-largest Swiss watch brand by estimated revenue.

Audemars Piguet. Founded in 1875, Audemars Piguet is owned by the Audemars and Piguet families. The brand is famous for the Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta in 1972. Audemars Piguet also moved up the rankings in 2025, passing Omega to become the third-largest brand.

Richard Mille. Founded in 2001, Richard Mille is a newer independent brand known for ultra-expensive watches using exotic materials. The brand had estimated sales of CHF 1.75 billion in 2025, selling approximately 6,000 watches. That works out to an average price of roughly CHF 290,000 per watch.

What Watch Brand Ownership Means for Consumers

Shared movements and R&D. Within Swatch Group, entry-level Tissot watches use ETA movements manufactured by the same company that makes Omega's Co-Axial movements. The technology trickles down. Within Richemont, Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre share research into ultra-thin movements and high-frequency escapements.

The independent advantage. Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet have gained market share because they are independent. Without public market pressure for quarterly results, they can invest in long-term brand equity, control production volumes, and maintain pricing power. Their independence is a competitive advantage, not a limitation.

The consolidation paradox. Swiss watch industry volumes have been cut in half since 2011, falling to 14.6 million units in 2025. But the top brands are producing fewer watches at higher prices. Watches priced above CHF 50,000 accounted for 37% of export value and 89% of growth in 2025, while representing just 1.4% of volumes. The industry is structurally moving upscale.

Montblanc and cross-industry connections. Richemont owns Montblanc, which makes luxury pens as well as watches. This connects the watch industry to the pen and stationery industry we cover in our pen and stationery brand ownership guide. Similarly, EssilorLuxottica holds eyewear licenses for several watch brands, connecting watches to our sunglasses brand ownership analysis.

Conclusion

Three independent family-owned brands (Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet) control most of the rest. The independents are gaining market share because their long-term orientation lets them invest in brand equity without quarterly pressure.
