Pen and Stationery Brand Ownership: Who Makes Your Writing Tools?

The Sharpie on your desk, the Parker pen in your drawer, and the Paper Mate in your bag are all owned by the same company. Newell Brands (NASDAQ: NWL) controls more writing instrument brands than any other corporation in the world. Your BIC Cristal, meanwhile, comes from a family-controlled French company where the Bich family holds 32% of shares and 60% of voting rights.

The pen and stationery industry looks competitive on the shelf. It is not. Two companies dominate global writing instruments, and the luxury end is controlled by a Swiss conglomerate that also makes Cartier watches. We traced the ownership of every major pen and stationery brand to show you where your money actually goes.

Newell Brands: The Writing Instruments Giant

Newell Brands is a leading global consumer goods company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The company trades on NASDAQ under the ticker NWL. According to its 10-K filing for fiscal year 2025 (filed February 2026), Newell's writing instruments are housed in its Learning and Development segment alongside baby gear and infant care products.

The segment's key writing brands include:

BrandTypeAcquired
SharpiePermanent markers1992 (via Sanford)
Paper MateBallpoint pens2000 (from Gillette)
ParkerPremium pens2000 (from Gillette)
WatermanPremium pens2000 (from Gillette)
EXPODry-erase markers1992 (via Sanford)
Elmer'sGlue and adhesives1997
DYMOLabeling solutions2005

Newell has been undergoing a significant restructuring. In December 2025, the company announced a "Productivity Plan" designed to simplify processes and streamline overhead. The plan includes reducing the global workforce by over 900 employees, primarily professional and clerical staff. The company also closed approximately 20 Yankee Candle stores in the US and Canada in January 2026 and continues to review non-core brands for potential divestiture.

The Parker and Paper Mate acquisition story is particularly convoluted. Gillette acquired Parker in 1993. Gillette already owned Paper Mate and Waterman. In 2000, Newell Rubbermaid bought Parker, Paper Mate, Waterman, and Liquid Paper from Gillette in a single deal. That means four of the most recognised pen brands in the world passed from one parent to another in a single transaction.

BIC: The Family-Controlled Challenger

BIC is the second major player in the writing instruments industry. Founded in 1945 by Marcel Bich in Clichy, France, BIC is listed on Euronext Paris under the ticker BB. The Bich family holds 32% of shares with 60% of voting rights through Société M.B.D., giving them effective control of the company despite the public listing.

According to BIC's July 2026 Investor Presentation, the company reported 2025 net sales of €2,090 million, down 0.9% at constant currency. BIC is the world leader in ball pens, correction products, and mechanical pencils. The company estimates it holds approximately 8% of the total stationery market.

The BIC Cristal, launched in 1950, is the best-selling pen in history. Over 100 billion units have been sold since its introduction. The pen is so iconic that it is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

BIC has been streamlining its portfolio. The company disposed of Cello, its Indian stationery brand, and discontinued Rocketbook, its smart notebook product. CEO Rob Versloot, who joined BIC in 2025, is preparing a new strategic plan to be presented later in 2026.

The Parker Pen Journey: From Gillette to Newell

Parker Pen Company, founded in 1888 by George Safford Parker in Janesville, Wisconsin, is one of the oldest pen manufacturers in the world. The brand dominated the premium pen market for decades, with its Parker 51 model selling over 20 million units between 1941 and 1972.

The ownership history of Parker reads like a corporate relay race:

YearOwnerEvent
1888George Safford ParkerFounded
1987Parker family / managementFamily sells controlling stake
1993GilletteAcquired Parker
2000Newell RubbermaidAcquired from Gillette
2026Newell BrandsCurrent owner

Gillette's acquisition of Parker in 1993 was part of a strategy to build a writing instruments portfolio. Gillette already owned Paper Mate (acquired in 1955) and Waterman (acquired in 1987). The idea was to create a multi-tier pen business alongside Gillette's razor business. It did not work as planned, and in 2000, Gillette sold the entire writing instruments division to Newell Rubbermaid.

Under Newell, Parker is positioned as a premium pen brand, sitting above Paper Mate in the portfolio. Parker focuses on fountain pens, rollerballs, and premium ballpoints, while Paper Mate targets the everyday consumer with affordable ballpoints and gel pens.

Luxury and Niche Writing Instruments

The luxury pen market operates separately from the mass market. Montblanc, the most famous luxury pen brand, is owned by Richemont, the Swiss conglomerate that also owns Cartier and IWC. Montblanc is part of Richemont's "Other" business area, which reported sales of €2.7 billion in FY2026. Richemont's FY26 annual report noted that Montblanc saw "encouraging sequential improvement" during the year. For more on Richemont's portfolio, read our watch brand ownership guide and our breakdown of 8 luxury watch brands all owned by Richemont.

Other luxury and niche pen brands remain independent:

  • Lamy - Private German company, founded 1930, known for the Lamy Safari
  • Pelikan - Private Swiss-German company, founded 1838, known for fountain pens
  • Faber-Castell - Private German company, founded 1761, one of the oldest manufacturers in the world
  • Cross - Private company, sold by A.T. Cross Corporation in 2023

These brands operate on a smaller scale than Newell or BIC but command strong loyalty among pen enthusiasts. None of them are owned by larger conglomerates, which is unusual in an industry where consolidation is the norm.

What Stationery Brand Ownership Means for Consumers

Shared manufacturing. Newell Brands manufactures Parker, Paper Mate, and Waterman pens in shared facilities. The manufacturing processes, quality control systems, and material sourcing are centralised. A Parker Jotter and a Paper Mate Write Bros share more infrastructure than their price difference suggests.

Brand tiering. Newell uses its brands to create clear price tiers. Sharpie is the marker brand. EXPO is the dry-erase brand. Parker is the premium pen. Paper Mate is the everyday pen. Waterman is the luxury pen. Each brand has a specific role in the portfolio, and consumers pay more for the higher-tier names even when the underlying manufacturing is similar.

Quality differences under same ownership. Parker and Paper Mate are both Newell brands, but they are not the same product. Parker uses higher-quality materials, better nibs, and more precise manufacturing tolerances. The price difference reflects real quality differences, not just brand positioning. But the R&D that goes into Parker's premium mechanisms eventually influences Paper Mate's lower-priced alternatives.

The BIC alternative. BIC's family ownership gives it a different orientation than Newell's public-market pressure. BIC can make long-term decisions without quarterly earnings calls driving strategy. This is one reason BIC has maintained the BIC Cristal's basic design for 75 years. Newell, under activist investor pressure, has been restructuring and divesting brands.

Conclusion

Two companies control the global pen and stationery industry. Newell Brands owns Sharpie, Parker, Paper Mate, Waterman, EXPO, Elmer's, and DYMO. BIC controls the ball pen market with its family-controlled structure and the iconic BIC Cristal. The luxury end belongs to Richemont through Montblanc. Independent brands like Lamy, Pelikan, and Faber-Castell occupy niche positions but command small market shares.
