Aquafresh is owned by Haleon plc (LSE: HLN, NYSE: HLN), a publicly traded British consumer health company. Haleon was spun off from GlaxoSmithKline in July 2022 and inherited Aquafresh as part of the oral health portfolio. Aquafresh was originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1973 by Beecham Group. The brand is best known for its tri-stripe toothpaste formulation combining fluoride protection, cooling gel, and anti-bacterial action in a single tube.

Beecham Group launched Aquafresh in the United Kingdom in 1973 as the world's first multi-stripe toothpaste. The original product combined fluoride protection in a white paste with a blue breath-freshening gel, delivered through a proprietary dual-chamber tube that dispensed both components simultaneously as a single striped ribbon. This was a genuine engineering novelty for a consumer oral care product at the time.
The two-stripe formula competed directly with Colgate Fluoride and Macleans in the UK market, where toothpaste was already a well-established category. Aquafresh differentiated on the visible multi-benefit claim: one product visibly doing two things at once. UK television advertising in the 1970s built the brand around this visible stripe proposition.
Aquafresh expanded to the United States in 1980, where it entered a market dominated by Crest (Procter and Gamble) and Colgate (Colgate-Palmolive). The U.S. launch introduced the brand to a far larger market and required a dedicated American manufacturing and distribution arrangement.
In 1989, Beecham Group merged with SmithKline Beckman to form SmithKline Beecham plc. Aquafresh moved with it. A third stripe was added to the formula during the late 1980s, creating the tri-stripe product that is now the brand standard. The third stripe added an anti-bacterial component to the existing fluoride and breath-freshening layers.
SmithKline Beecham merged with Glaxo Wellcome in 2000 to form GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Aquafresh became part of the new company's consumer healthcare division. Under GSK, the brand competed alongside Sensodyne, which GSK acquired through the 2012 purchase of Novartis's consumer health business in a subsequent asset swap. Sensodyne grew to become Haleon's flagship oral care brand, receiving significantly more marketing investment than Aquafresh.
In 2019, GSK combined its consumer healthcare division with Pfizer Consumer Healthcare in a 50/50 joint venture. Aquafresh was included in this structure. In July 2022, GSK separated the consumer health joint venture as Haleon plc, which listed independently on the London and New York stock exchanges.
As of June 2026, Aquafresh is sold in more than 100 markets worldwide. The core product line includes Aquafresh Triple Protection, Aquafresh Extreme Clean, Aquafresh White and Shine, Aquafresh Sensitive, and Aquafresh Kids variants. Haleon also markets Aquafresh toothbrushes and mouthwash in select markets.
