History of Aquafresh

  • Founded: 1973
  • Founders: Beecham Group

Beecham Group launched Aquafresh in the United Kingdom in 1973 as the world's first multi-stripe toothpaste. The original product combined fluoride protection in a white paste with a blue breath-freshening gel, delivered through a proprietary dual-chamber tube that dispensed both components simultaneously as a single striped ribbon. This was a genuine engineering novelty for a consumer oral care product at the time.

The two-stripe formula competed directly with Colgate Fluoride and Macleans in the UK market, where toothpaste was already a well-established category. Aquafresh differentiated on the visible multi-benefit claim: one product visibly doing two things at once. UK television advertising in the 1970s built the brand around this visible stripe proposition.

Aquafresh expanded to the United States in 1980, where it entered a market dominated by Crest (Procter and Gamble) and Colgate (Colgate-Palmolive). The U.S. launch introduced the brand to a far larger market and required a dedicated American manufacturing and distribution arrangement.

In 1989, Beecham Group merged with SmithKline Beckman to form SmithKline Beecham plc. Aquafresh moved with it. A third stripe was added to the formula during the late 1980s, creating the tri-stripe product that is now the brand standard. The third stripe added an anti-bacterial component to the existing fluoride and breath-freshening layers.

SmithKline Beecham merged with Glaxo Wellcome in 2000 to form GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Aquafresh became part of the new company's consumer healthcare division. Under GSK, the brand competed alongside Sensodyne, which GSK acquired through the 2012 purchase of Novartis's consumer health business in a subsequent asset swap. Sensodyne grew to become Haleon's flagship oral care brand, receiving significantly more marketing investment than Aquafresh.

In 2019, GSK combined its consumer healthcare division with Pfizer Consumer Healthcare in a 50/50 joint venture. Aquafresh was included in this structure. In July 2022, GSK separated the consumer health joint venture as Haleon plc, which listed independently on the London and New York stock exchanges.

As of June 2026, Aquafresh is sold in more than 100 markets worldwide. The core product line includes Aquafresh Triple Protection, Aquafresh Extreme Clean, Aquafresh White and Shine, Aquafresh Sensitive, and Aquafresh Kids variants. Haleon also markets Aquafresh toothbrushes and mouthwash in select markets.

Who founded Haleon?
Haleon was formed through the demerger of GSK's consumer healthcare division in July 2022 and does not have a traditional founder. The consumer healthcare business that became Haleon was assembled by GSK and Pfizer through decades of acquisitions. In 2019, GSK and Pfizer combined their consumer healthcare businesses into a joint venture, which was subsequently demerged as Haleon in 2022. Brian McNamara became CEO at the time of the demerger.

Where is Haleon headquartered?
Haleon is headquartered in Weybridge, Surrey, United Kingdom. The company's registered office and principal executive offices are located in Weybridge. Haleon operates manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Germany, Ireland, and China. The company sells products in more than 170 countries.

Who owns Haleon?
Haleon plc is a publicly traded company with no controlling shareholder. At the time of the July 2022 demerger, GSK plc and Pfizer Inc. each retained significant stakes in Haleon. Both companies have been reducing their positions through secondary share placements. As of early 2026, both GSK and Pfizer have substantially reduced their stakes, each holding less than 10% of shares. The remaining shares are held by institutional investors and public shareholders.

What is Haleon's revenue?
Haleon reported FY2025 net revenue of approximately GBP 10.2 billion, with organic revenue growth of approximately 4%. The oral health category is the largest and fastest-growing segment, driven by Sensodyne. The company employs approximately 24,000 people and sells products in more than 170 countries.

Aquafresh Sustainability & Ethics

Aquafresh is not certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny or listed on PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies database as of June 2026. Haleon does not claim cruelty-free certification for Aquafresh on its product pages.

Haleon has committed to ensuring that 100 percent of its primary packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2025. The standard Aquafresh toothpaste tube is made from plastic laminate, which is not widely accepted in municipal recycling programs in most markets. Haleon has not publicly confirmed that Aquafresh tubes meet the 2025 commitment.

Haleon published its first standalone sustainability report in 2022. The company's commitments include reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030 versus a 2020 baseline, and achieving net zero across its value chain by 2045. Aquafresh manufacturing sites are included within Haleon's reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Haleon is a member of the Consumer Goods Forum's Plastics Waste Coalition of Action, which coordinates industry action on plastic packaging. The brand has not received independent B Corp certification as of June 2026.
