History of Allswell

  • Founded: 2017
  • Founders: Ariel Kaye
  • Acquired by Walmart Inc.: 2018

Allswell launched in 2017 under the creative direction of Ariel Kaye, who had previously founded Parachute Home, a popular bedding brand. The brand entered the online mattress market at a moment of intense competition, with Casper having raised $55 million by 2016 and Purple completing an initial public offering in 2018. Allswell's initial positioning was deliberately simple: two mattress models, a limited color palette, and price points well below premium competitors.

The original lineup consisted of a hybrid mattress retailing for approximately $345 in Twin size, a more premium "Supreme" hybrid at a higher price, and a curated set of bedding accessories including sheet sets and pillows. Distribution was exclusively online through allswell.com, relying on bed-in-a-box shipping methods that had become the standard for the category.

Walmart acquired Allswell in 2018. The price was not publicly disclosed. The rationale was straightforward: Walmart had already acquired Jet.com for $3.3 billion in 2016 and Bonobos for $310 million in 2017 as part of a broader push into premium direct-to-consumer brands. Allswell fit the same thesis, giving Walmart a credible mid-range mattress brand that did not carry the Walmart name and could appeal to millennial consumers who actively avoided mass-market retail associations.

Following the acquisition, Allswell expanded its product range to include bed frames, duvet covers, throws, and decorative pillows. Distribution extended to Walmart.com in addition to the standalone site. By 2020, certain Allswell products appeared in select Walmart physical locations, though the brand's primary channel remained online. This hybrid distribution distinguished Allswell from pure direct-to-consumer competitors with no physical presence.

The online mattress market contracted sharply between 2022 and 2024 after years of pandemic-driven demand surge. Casper was taken private in 2022 after posting consistent losses. Several smaller DTC mattress brands exited the market entirely. Allswell's backing by Walmart's logistics infrastructure and capital base insulated it from these pressures. As of June 2026, Allswell continues to operate with its core lineup of hybrid mattresses, bedding, and sleep accessories, maintaining its positioning below premium brands and above mass-market alternatives.

Allswell Recalls & Controversies

Allswell has no documented product safety recalls as of June 2026. The brand has not been the subject of CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) actions or formal regulatory enforcement.

Walmart's broader labor practices have generated ongoing controversy. In 2023, the United Food and Commercial Workers union and various labor advocacy organizations cited Walmart for inadequate wages at distribution facilities. These disputes are at the parent company level and do not directly involve Allswell's operations, but they affect brand perception for consumers who consider corporate ownership when making purchases.

The DTC mattress industry broadly has faced scrutiny regarding review authenticity. The Federal Trade Commission has pursued cases against brands that paid for or fabricated consumer reviews. Allswell has not been named in any such proceedings as of June 2026.
