PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is owned by Collectors Holdings, Inc., the private company formerly known as Collectors Universe. An investor group led by entrepreneur Nat Turner took the company private in February 2021 for approximately $853 million. PSA is headquartered in Santa Ana, California, and is the largest third-party trading card grading service in the world.

PSA was founded in July 1991 by David Hall, who had already built Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in 1986. Hall saw that sports card collectors faced the same problem coin collectors had: without an objective third party grading a card's condition, buyers could not trust what they were purchasing, especially as valuable vintage cards changed hands.
The early years were difficult. Many dealers opposed third-party grading, fearing it would compress their margins, and PSA lost an average of about $10,000 a month for its first three years, staying afloat on support from PCGS. The turning point came as buyers began insisting on graded cards, forcing dealers to follow. By 1996 PSA was grading nearly 10,000 cards a month, and the 1998 McGwire-Sosa home run chase, which created huge demand for the players' rookie cards, accelerated adoption sharply.
In February 1999 Hall folded PSA and PCGS into the newly formed Collectors Universe, which went public later that year on Nasdaq as CLCT. As internet card trading exploded, PSA's volumes grew roughly fivefold to about 80,000 cards a month and it became the dominant name in grading, holding around 90% of the card grading market at that time.
The next two decades built PSA into the default grading standard. Its 1-to-10 grading scale became the hobby's shared language, and a PSA 10 grade became the benchmark for a card's condition and value. PSA/DNA extended the model into autograph and memorabilia authentication, and the company later added ticket grading.
The pandemic-era card boom overwhelmed it. Surging submissions forced PSA to suspend most service levels in early 2021 as backlogs ballooned, just as the Turner-led buyout closed that February. Under private ownership the company invested in capacity and technology to work through the backlog and resume full services.
The 2020s brought rapid expansion of the parent. Collectors sold the Goldin auction house to eBay in 2024 while simultaneously acquiring eBay's vault service, which PSA folded into its own vaulting offering. SGC joined the group in 2024, and new PSA grading hubs opened in Plano, Texas, and Boca Raton, Florida, in 2025 to scale capacity. In December 2025 Collectors agreed to acquire Beckett, which would bring the second most recognized grading brand into the same group while keeping it operationally independent.
What is Collectors?
Collectors Holdings, Inc. is a private Santa Ana, California company and the world's largest provider of collectibles authentication and grading. Its brands include PSA, PCGS, SGC, Wata, and Card Ladder, and it agreed to acquire Beckett in December 2025.
Is Collectors publicly traded?
No. Collectors was public as Collectors Universe on Nasdaq until February 2021, when Nat Turner's investor group took it private for approximately $853 million. It now operates privately with no stock listing.
When was Collectors founded?
Its lineage traces to Professional Coin Grading Service, founded by David Hall in 1986, and PSA in 1991. Hall formed Collectors Universe in 1999, which rebranded as Collectors in 2022 after the 2021 privatization.
Who owns Collectors?
Collectors is controlled by Nat Turner and the investor group that privatized it in 2021, including D1 Capital Partners, Cohen Private Ventures, and TCG Capital Management. Turner serves as CEO, with Naeem Ishaq as president and CFO.
What is Collectors' market position?
Collectors is the dominant collectibles grading company, owning the leading card and coin grading brands PSA and PCGS. Its planned Beckett acquisition would consolidate the two largest card graders under one owner, a position that has drawn antitrust scrutiny.
Did Collectors acquire Beckett?
Collectors announced a definitive agreement to acquire Beckett in December 2025. Beckett is to remain an independent brand within the Collectors family, continuing its own grading operations, marketplace, magazines, and price guide, subject to the transaction's completion.
PSA's documented controversies concern the grading business itself rather than physical product safety.
The most significant operational episode was the 2021 backlog crisis. Surging pandemic-era submissions overwhelmed capacity, forcing PSA to suspend nearly all service levels and leaving customers waiting months for graded cards while prices climbed. The company rebuilt capacity and resumed services, but the episode damaged trust with some collectors.
Longer-running industry criticisms target grading consistency and the handling of altered or trimmed cards, where counterfeit or doctored submissions have occasionally been encapsulated. These are inherent risks of a human grading process and are treated as ongoing quality concerns rather than resolved matters.
The most consequential scrutiny now attaches to market concentration. Collectors' acquisition of Beckett, announced December 2025, would place the two largest card grading brands under one owner, drawing antitrust attention to a segment where PSA already holds dominant share. The transaction's regulatory path is the central open controversy around the brand as of October 2026.
