The Truist brand was announced on June 12, 2019, four months after BB&T Corporation and SunTrust Banks agreed to merge in a deal valued at roughly $66 billion. Executives chose a newly coined name over either legacy brand to signal a merger of equals, after testing thousands of candidates. The name combined the concept of "trust" with a suggestion of "true," and it launched with a purple logo when the merger closed on December 6, 2019.
The rollout was expensive and slow. Truist spent hundreds of millions of dollars on rebranding, signage, and sponsorships, and legacy BB&T and SunTrust branches continued operating under their old names until systems conversion in 2021 and 2022. The conversion produced real customer friction, with complaints about account access during the transition weekends.
Brand-building leaned heavily on sports sponsorships. Truist holds the naming rights to Truist Park, the Atlanta Braves stadium opened in 2017 under SunTrust naming rights and renamed in 2020, and sponsors the Truist Championship on the PGA Tour and the Miami Open tennis tournament.
Since 2021, the brand has consolidated around the master Truist identity, retiring most legacy product names while keeping LightStream separate. The 2024 sales of Truist Insurance Holdings, which rebranded as TIH, and Sterling Capital Management removed two further names from the portfolio.
What is Truist Financial Corporation?
Truist Financial Corporation is the bank holding company that owns Truist Bank, one of the ten largest commercial banks in the United States. It was formed in December 2019 by the merger of BB&T Corporation and SunTrust Banks and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company trades on the NYSE under ticker TFC.
Is Truist publicly traded?
Yes. Truist Financial Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol TFC. Both predecessor banks were also publicly traded: BB&T and SunTrust shares were exchanged for Truist shares when the merger closed in December 2019.
When was Truist founded?
Truist as a company was founded on December 6, 2019, when the BB&T and SunTrust merger closed. Its predecessor banks are much older: BB&T was founded in 1872 in Wilson, North Carolina, and SunTrust's earliest predecessor, the Trust Company of Georgia, was founded in Atlanta in 1891.
Who is the CEO of Truist?
Bill Rogers is chairman and chief executive officer of Truist. He led BB&T before the merger and became Truist CEO in September 2021, succeeding Kelly King. Mike Maguire serves as chief financial officer.
What brands does Truist own?
Truist operates primarily under the Truist master brand, including Truist Bank for retail and commercial banking, Truist Securities for investment banking, and Truist Wealth for private wealth services. It also owns LightStream, an online consumer lender. It sold Truist Insurance Holdings in May 2024 for $15.5 billion and Sterling Capital Management to Guardian Capital Group in July 2024.
What was Truist's revenue in 2025?
Truist reported total revenue of $20.5 billion for fiscal year 2025, including $14.6 billion of net interest income and $5.9 billion of noninterest income. Net income available to common shareholders was approximately $5.0 billion, or $3.82 per diluted share, up 14% from 2024.
Truist operates under the corporate commitments of Truist Financial, which pledged $60 billion in community lending and investment for low- and moderate-income communities and has directed philanthropy through the Truist Foundation toward workforce development and small business support.
The bank reports financed-emissions work under the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials and has committed to operational net zero by 2050. No Truist-branded product carries independent environmental certification, which is standard for retail banking.
Consumer-facing ethics issues center on fees and account practices rather than environmental claims. See the controversies section for the overdraft litigation resolved in 2026.
In January 2026, Truist executed a settlement in Bickerstaff v. SunTrust Bank, a legacy class action over overdraft fees at SunTrust before the merger, providing for payments of up to $240 million subject to court approval and valid claims. The case concerned the ordering of debit transactions to maximize overdraft charges.
The 2021 and 2022 systems conversions that moved legacy BB&T and SunTrust accounts onto unified Truist platforms generated customer complaints about locked accounts and service disruption. Truist reimbursed documented losses and said it remediated the issues, but the conversion remains a cited example of merger-integration risk in retail banking.
In 2022, Truist paid $9 million to settle a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau action over how it handled consumer-reporting disputes related to COVID-era payment relief, without admitting wrongdoing. The bureau also examined Truist's use of a digital assistant in customer service, closing that inquiry without action.
