The unit combines two regional investment banks. Robinson-Humphrey Company was founded in Atlanta in 1894 and became one of the South's prominent securities firms, joining the New York Stock Exchange in 1915. Shearson acquired it in 1982, then sold it back to Atlanta-based managers in 1993. SunTrust Banks acquired Robinson-Humphrey in 2001 and renamed it SunTrust Robinson Humphrey in 2006.
BB&T built its own capital markets business, BB&T Capital Markets, from a base in Richmond, Virginia, expanded through the 2009 acquisition of brokerage Scott & Stringfellow and the 2012 purchase of investment bank Stifel Nicolaus's public finance and middle-market businesses.
When the banks merged in December 2019, the combined investment bank took the Truist Securities name in 2020, headquartered in Atlanta with major offices in Richmond, Charlotte, and New York. The division inherited sector coverage strengths in financial institutions, real estate, healthcare, energy, and consumer industries.
Since formation, Truist Securities has grown its advisory and debt capital markets business, expanded into new sectors, and steadily increased investment banking revenue as part of Truist's fee-income diversification after the insurance brokerage sale.

As a broker-dealer, Truist Securities operates under FINRA and SEC oversight and, like all large broker-dealers, has periodic regulatory disclosures, customer arbitrations, and minor fines reported through BrokerCheck records. None rise to the level of a major public scandal in recent years.
The predecessor firms carry their own histories. Scott & Stringfellow, acquired by BB&T in 2009, had paid regulatory settlements in the 2000s over mutual fund trading practices. Those matters predated the Truist formation and were resolved under prior ownership.
