History of LightStream

  • Founded: 2012
  • Founders: SunTrust Banks (internal development)

SunTrust Banks launched LightStream in 2012, absorbing and rebranding an earlier online lending platform called FirstAgain. The concept was simple: prime-credit consumers could apply entirely online for unsecured personal loans and receive funding quickly, without visiting a branch.

The division grew through the 2010s by targeting borrowers with strong credit profiles for defined purposes: auto purchases, home improvement, debt consolidation, medical expenses, and recreation vehicle purchases. Fixed rates and a rate-beat promise against competing offers were the core selling points.

When SunTrust merged with BB&T in December 2019 to form Truist, LightStream was retained as a named division rather than rebranded. It continued operating from San Diego, the city where FirstAgain had been based, and kept its national digital-first model distinct from the branch-led Truist retail business.

In recent years LightStream has been folded into Truist's consumer lending reporting, with the platform's loan growth contributing to the consumer segment's expansion cited in 2025 results.
