AMD Ryzen Threadripper was not originally planned as part of AMD's official roadmap. Instead, the project began as a passion project by a small team inside AMD who saw an opportunity to give AMD the lead in desktop CPU performance. In 2020, AMD introduced Threadripper PRO processors, combining the knowledge gained from desktop Threadripper with enterprise features to create true workstation processors. The PRO line added support for ECC memory, more PCIe lanes, and enhanced reliability features.
The fourth generation Threadripper 5000 series launched in 2022 based on Zen 3 architecture, followed by the Threadripper 7000 series in 2023 based on Zen 4 architecture. The latest Threadripper 9000 series launched in 2025, continuing to push the boundaries of desktop and workstation performance.
