History of AMD
Advanced Micro Devices was founded on May 1, 1969, by Jerry Sanders and seven co-founders, all former employees of Fairchild Semiconductor. The company initially focused on producing logic chips and became a second-source manufacturer for Intel's x86 processors, producing compatible chips under a licensing agreement.
In 1991, AMD released the Am386 processor, its own x86-compatible chip, following a legal dispute with Intel over licensing rights. AMD won the right to produce x86-compatible processors, establishing the competitive dynamic between the two companies that persists today. The Athlon processor, released in 1999, was the first AMD chip to outperform Intel's flagship processor in benchmarks, establishing AMD as a credible competitor.
AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006 for $5.4 billion, entering the discrete graphics card market and competing with NVIDIA. The acquisition gave AMD a graphics division that produces Radeon GPUs. AMD struggled financially through the late 2000s and early 2010s, losing processor market share to Intel and graphics market share to NVIDIA.
Dr. Lisa Su became CEO in October 2014. Under her leadership, AMD developed the Zen microarchitecture, which launched in 2017 as the Ryzen processor family.
