History of Sygic

  • Founded: 2004
  • Founders: Michal Stencl
  • Acquired by W.A.G. Payment Solutions plc (Eurowag): 2019

Sygic was founded in 2004 by Michal Stencl in Bratislava, Slovakia. The company was one of the first to offer GPS navigation for mobile phones, launching its navigation app for iPhone in 2009 (the first navigation app on the App Store) and for Android in 2010 (the second on Google Play). This early-mover advantage on mobile platforms helped Sygic build a global user base.

The company's flagship product, Sygic GPS Navigation, offered full offline navigation with maps stored on the device, a significant advantage in the early smartphone era when mobile data was expensive and unreliable. The app used map data from TomTom (then Tele Atlas) and later added additional data sources.

In 2015, Sygic reached 100 million downloads across all platforms. The company expanded its product line to include Sygic Truck Navigation, a specialized version for commercial vehicles with truck-specific routing, height and weight restrictions, and hazard warnings. This product became particularly important for the later Eurowag acquisition, as it aligned with Eurowag's focus on commercial road transport.

By 2020, Sygic had surpassed 200 million downloads and was available in over 40 languages. The company introduced augmented reality navigation features, using the phone's camera to overlay navigation instructions on the real-world view through the windshield. This feature, while innovative, was also offered by competitors and did not become a primary differentiator.

In 2019, Eurowag acquired 70% of Sygic, marking a significant shift in the company's strategic direction. Rather than operating as an independent consumer navigation company, Sygic became part of a broader commercial transport ecosystem. The acquisition brought Sygic's navigation technology into Eurowag's platform, which serves trucking companies across Europe with fuel cards, toll payments, and fleet management.

Between 2019 and 2024, Sygic continued to operate with some autonomy under the previous shareholders' agreement, which granted minority shareholders certain rights over the application of Sygic's resources. During this period, Sygic maintained its consumer app while increasingly contributing to Eurowag's commercial transport solutions.

In April 2024, Eurowag completed the full acquisition of Sygic, purchasing the remaining 30% for EUR 14.4 million. With full control, Eurowag integrated Sygic more deeply into its digital platform, leveraging Sygic's navigation expertise across Eurowag's entire mobility solutions portfolio. Martin Strigac, Sygic's CEO, joined Eurowag as Chief Product Officer.

In 2025 and 2026, Sygic continued to develop its navigation products under new General Manager Stefan Janciga. The company focused on enhancing its truck navigation features, integrating with Eurowag's toll and fuel card systems, and improving its consumer app. Sygic also expanded its automotive partnerships, providing navigation technology to vehicle manufacturers through Sygic Navigation for Automotive.
