Who Owns Google Maps?

Google Maps was launched in February 2005 as a web-based mapping service. The product emerged from Google's acquisition of Where 2 Technologies, an Australian startup that had developed a desktop mapping application. Google also acquired Keyhole, a geospatial data company whose technology became the foundation for satellite imagery in Google Maps and later evolved into Google Earth. These two acquisitions, both in 2004 and 2005, gave Google the mapping technology and imagery infrastructure to launch a competitive product.

The original Google Maps was a browser-based application using JavaScript and XML to render interactive maps. It was technically notable for allowing users to drag and zoom maps without reloading the page, a significant improvement over the click-and-wait interfaces of competing services like MapQuest. Google Maps quickly gained adoption and by 2006 had overtaken MapQuest as the most popular mapping website in the United States.

In 2007, Google introduced Street View, a feature that provided panoramic street-level imagery. Street View launched in five US cities and gradually expanded to cover most of the world over the following decade. The feature required Google to drive vehicles equipped with cameras through millions of miles of roads, a logistical effort that took years and faced privacy challenges in several countries.

Google Maps for mobile launched on Android in 2008 and on iOS in 2012. The mobile version introduced turn-by-turn navigation, which had previously been available only through dedicated GPS devices or paid subscription services. This feature disrupted the personal navigation device market, contributing to the decline of companies like Garmin and TomTom in the consumer segment. In 2013, Google acquired Waze, a community-based traffic and navigation app, for approximately $1.1 billion. Waze continues to operate as a separate product.

Google integrated DeepMind AI technology into Maps in 2019 to improve estimated time of arrival (ETA) accuracy. The AI system analyzes historical traffic patterns and real-time data to predict travel times with approximately 97% accuracy. Google also added features like offline maps, indoor maps for major venues, and live transit information over the years.

In 2020, Google introduced detailed street maps with scaled representations of roads, sidewalks, and medians, initially in select cities. The service expanded its eco-friendly routing feature in 2021, which suggests fuel-efficient routes to drivers. By 2024, Google Maps covered over 250 countries and territories and processed over 8 billion local searches per day.

Google has continued to integrate AI into Maps. Recent features include Immersive View, which provides photorealistic 3D previews of neighborhoods and routes, and Lens in Maps, an augmented reality feature that overlays directions and business information on the camera view. These features rely on Google's advances in computer vision and generative AI.
