History of House of Blues

  • Founded: 1992
  • Founders: Isaac Tigrett, Dan Aykroyd
  • Acquired by Live Nation Entertainment: 2006

Isaac Tigrett, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe, and actor Dan Aykroyd founded House of Blues together, opening the first location in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1992. The concept combined a music venue with a restaurant themed around blues and African-American culture, targeting both concertgoers and diners.

The brand expanded through the 1990s into a chain of clubs across US cities. In 1999, it bought Universal Concerts from Seagram for $190 million, adding a network of amphitheaters and venues and becoming a significant promoter alongside the club business. An IPO planned for 2000 was shelved when the market collapsed.

Live Nation's July 2006 acquisition made House of Blues a division of the world's largest concert promoter, and the chain became the company's small-to-mid-size venue presence in major markets. Over time the footprint consolidated to about 11 clubs, concentrated in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Diego, Orlando, Anaheim, New Orleans, Houston, Boston, Dallas, and Myrtle Beach.

The brand has preserved its blues theme and art collection, and many clubs include the Foundation Room, a members lounge and event space that operates as a premium tier within the venues.

About Live Nation Entertainment

Is Live Nation Entertainment owned by another company?
No, Live Nation Entertainment is an independent, publicly traded company with no parent organization. The company operates independently with shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol LYV. While Liberty Media has held significant stakes through its Liberty Live Holdings subsidiary at various times, no single entity has controlling ownership. Michael Rapino has served as CEO since the 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

Is Live Nation Entertainment publicly traded?
Yes, Live Nation Entertainment is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker LYV. The company has been publicly traded since its formation through the 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. The aggregate market value of common stock held by non-affiliates was approximately $24.1 billion as of June 30, 2025.

What is Live Nation Entertainment's annual revenue?
Live Nation Entertainment generated $25.2 billion in revenue in FY2025, representing a 9% increase from $23.2 billion in FY2024. Operating income was $1.3 billion, up 52% year-over-year, and adjusted operating income was $2.4 billion, up 10%. The Concerts segment generated $20.9 billion (83% of revenue), Ticketing generated $3.1 billion (12%), and Sponsorship & Advertising generated $1.3 billion (5%).

What was the Live Nation antitrust verdict?
On April 15, 2026, a federal jury in New York found Live Nation and Ticketmaster liable on every antitrust claim submitted for verdict. Jurors concluded that Ticketmaster illegally maintained monopoly power in primary ticketing markets and that Live Nation used its control of large amphitheaters to unlawfully tie concert-promotion services. The jury found consumers were overcharged by $1.72 per ticket at 257 major concert venues. Live Nation has filed post-trial motions to overturn the verdict, and as of August 2026, Judge Arun Subramanian had not yet ruled. Remedies proceedings, including potential structural remedies, remain paused.

What was the DOJ settlement with Live Nation?
In March 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement with Live Nation requiring Ticketmaster to divest up to 13 amphitheaters, reserve 50% of tickets for nonexclusive venues, and cap ticketing service fees at 15%. The settlement resolved all remaining matters with the DOJ without admission of wrongdoing. However, a majority of state attorneys general rejected the settlement and pursued their own claims, leading to the April 2026 jury verdict. Live Nation has accrued $280 million toward state damages and civil penalty claims.

How many events does Live Nation promote?
Live Nation promoted approximately 55,000 live music and other events in 2025, making it the world's largest concert promoter. The company operates in more than 40 countries and manages a portfolio of owned and operated venues, including amphitheaters, clubs, theaters, and festivals. Through its Ticketmaster platform, approximately 346 million fee-generating tickets were sold in 2025, with an additional 300 million tickets sold without fees through Ticketmaster systems.

What is the Ticketmaster Taylor Swift controversy?
In November 2022, Ticketmaster's presale for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour experienced severe technical failures due to unprecedented demand, leaving millions of fans unable to purchase tickets. The incident drew widespread public criticism and political scrutiny, with members of Congress calling for investigations into Live Nation's market power. The controversy contributed to the DOJ and state attorneys general filing an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation in 2024, which culminated in the April 2026 jury verdict finding the company liable on all antitrust claims.

Who is the CEO of Live Nation Entertainment?
Michael Rapino has served as CEO of Live Nation Entertainment since the 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. He previously served as CEO of Live Nation from 2005. Rapino led the March 2026 settlement negotiations with the DOJ, meeting directly with the acting assistant attorney general for the Antitrust Division to reach the agreement.

House of Blues Sustainability & Ethics

House of Blues has no independent sustainability certifications at the brand level; operations follow Live Nation's corporate programs including venue waste reduction and event sustainability initiatives.

The brand's charitable arm, Music Forward (originally House of Blues Music Forward Foundation), supports music industry education and career access for young people, operating programs in underserved communities. That legacy reflects the brand's founding emphasis on music education alongside entertainment.

Community ethics are routine for venue operators: noise, crowd management, and neighborhood relations at club locations. No systemic brand-level controversies are on record.

House of Blues Recalls & Controversies

House of Blues has not been the subject of major brand-level controversies. Its incidents are individual event issues at specific clubs rather than systemic problems: occasional crowd management complaints, liquor license matters, and neighborhood disputes in certain markets.

The brand's public profile is mostly positive, built on the blues theme and live music programming. It has faced criticism over the years from blues purists who argued the corporate chain diluted the genre, a cultural rather than legal critique.

As a Live Nation division, it shares the parent's antitrust exposure, but no House of Blues-specific regulatory action has been reported.
