Who Owns Hotpoint?

Hotpoint's sustainability efforts operate under Beko Europe's corporate framework. Arcelik, as the majority owner, has established environmental commitments that apply across the Beko Europe portfolio.

Arcelik has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, with intermediate targets for 2030. The company reports its environmental performance under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Beko Europe's manufacturing facilities participate in energy efficiency programs, waste reduction initiatives, and water conservation measures.

Hotpoint products are designed to meet EU energy efficiency standards, with most models rated A or B on the EU Energy Label. The brand has introduced washing machines with lower water consumption and dishwashers with eco-wash programs. However, Hotpoint does not hold independent sustainability certifications such as B Corp status or specific environmental product certifications beyond mandatory EU compliance.

The brand's products comply with EU Ecodesign Directive requirements, WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations, and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directives. Beko Europe offers take-back programs for old appliances through retail partnerships in the UK and other European markets.

Hotpoint does not publish brand-specific sustainability reports. Environmental performance data is reported at the Arcelik and Beko Europe corporate level rather than for individual brands.

The most significant controversy in Hotpoint's history is the tumble dryer safety recall that spanned 2015 to 2019. In 2015, Indesit (then under Whirlpool ownership) issued a safety alert for certain Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers produced between April 2004 and October 2015. The issue involved a design flaw that allowed lint to escape the filter and accumulate near heating elements, creating a fire risk.

Whirlpool initially attempted to address the problem through safety modifications rather than a full recall. Engineers were sent to modify affected machines starting in 2016. However, after sustained pressure from consumer groups and government scrutiny, Whirlpool issued a full recall in July 2019, offering to replace or repair up to 800,000 affected machines. The UK government's Office for Product Safety and Standards investigated Whirlpool's handling of the recall, and the company was criticized for the slow pace of its response.

In 2019, Whirlpool was also investigated by the UK Parliament's Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee over its handling of the dryer safety issue. The committee found that Whirlpool had been too slow to warn consumers and that its modification program was inadequate. Whirlpool was subsequently fined by the Competition and Markets Authority for failing to adequately notify consumers of the recall.

The recall affected Hotpoint's brand reputation significantly. Consumer trust surveys conducted by Which? in the years following the recall showed declining confidence in Hotpoint products. The brand has since worked to rebuild trust through improved quality control and customer service under Beko Europe ownership.
