Yaron Ben-Zvi founded Haven Life in 2015 inside MassMutual's innovation organization in New York. The idea was to sell term life insurance fully online, with an algorithmic underwriting process that could approve qualified applicants without a medical exam. Haven Life's flagship product, Haven Term, offered coverage up to $3 million issued by MassMutual or C.M. Life.
The brand won attention as one of the first credible digital life insurance offerings backed by a top-rated mutual insurer. It expanded to sell coverage in all 50 states and added products including disability income insurance and simplified annuities. Haven Life Plus, a rider bundle, added services such as a digital will and fitness app memberships.
In 2021, MassMutual spun out the technology behind Haven Life into a separate B2B subsidiary called Haven Technologies, which sold its insurtech software platform to other carriers. Ben-Zvi, who led both ventures, departed in 2022.
In November 2023, MassMutual announced it would wind down Haven Life, citing limited consumer adoption and high customer acquisition costs in the direct-to-consumer channel. The brand stopped accepting new applications on January 12, 2024, and issued its final policies on March 31, 2024. MassMutual said it would shift direct access to its products to massmutual.com. Haven Technologies was folded into the parent company at the end of 2024, and roughly half of its staff were absorbed while the rest were laid off or offered roles inside MassMutual.

The brand's wind-down itself was the central event. MassMutual emphasized that no policyholder lost coverage; the wind-down was orderly, with in-force policies continuing under MassMutual servicing and its A++ financial strength rating. Critics pointed to the episode as evidence that incumbent insurers struggled to make standalone insurtech brands work, following a pattern of similar retreats across the industry.
