MassMutual was chartered on May 15, 1851, by Caleb Rice, a Springfield lawyer who became its first president. Rice raised $100,000 in guarantee capital from local subscribers to launch the mutual insurer. From its earliest years, the company wrote policies for customers who lived and traveled beyond New England, unusual for the era.
The company began paying dividends to policyowners in 1869 and has done so every year since. It introduced disability income insurance in 1968, retirement products in the following decades, and built a career agency force that evolved into today's affiliated advisor network operating through MML Investors Services.
MassMutual expanded beyond insurance into investments. It acquired OppenheimerFunds in 1990, holding the asset manager until selling it to Invesco in 2019, and it built its asset management arm into Barings, formed in 2016 from Babson Capital, Wood Creek, Cornerstone, and Baring Asset Management.
In May 2021, MassMutual completed the acquisition of Great American Life Insurance Company from American Financial Group for approximately $3.5 billion, renaming it MassMutual Ascend in 2022 and deepening its annuity business. The company also experimented with digital distribution through Haven Life, a direct-to-consumer brand launched in 2015 and wound down in 2024 after limited adoption.
In 2025, MassMutual reported record results, with domestic insurance sales above $43 billion and life insurance in force near $1.1 trillion. The company marked its 175th anniversary in 2026, the same year it approved the largest policyowner dividend in its history.
