Harold Evans founded Allied Mutual Automobile Association in Des Moines, Iowa in 1929, organizing the company in alliance with the Iowa Farm Bureau to serve rural drivers, much as Nationwide's founders had done in Ohio three years earlier. The company grew from automobile coverage into a multi-line mutual insurer serving the upper Midwest.
Through the mid-twentieth century Allied expanded geographically and added fire, casualty, and life operations, building a federation of insurance companies under the Allied Group identity. It became one of the most important insurers headquartered in Des Moines, a city that grew into a national insurance center partly on the strength of companies like Allied and its rivals in the local market.
Allied Group reorganized and converted from pure mutual to stock form in the 1980s, later merging back into a mutual structure, and by the 1990s had become a significant regional insurer with a strong independent-agent distribution network. In 1998 Allied merged with Nationwide, a combination that preserved Des Moines as a Nationwide regional headquarters and made the Allied name the group's flagship for independent agents.
Under Nationwide, the Allied brand continued to front personal auto, home, and small commercial products sold through independent agents, even as the parent moved its overall marketing to a masterbrand strategy. The Allied name retained value because independent agents sell multiple carriers and Allied's long channel relationships were a core asset of the 1998 deal. Today the brand operates under the positioning Allied Insurance, a Nationwide company.

Both moves accelerated the company's institutional, employer-focused growth strategy ahead of its 2026 centennial.
