The brand began with a 1928 Chicago merger of four parts makers: Borg & Beck, Warner Gear, Marvel-Schebler, and Mechanics Universal Joint, forming Borg-Warner Corporation. It supplied clutches, transmissions, and carburetors to the American auto industry from the start.
The mid-century Borg-Warner became a diversified conglomerate spanning appliances, chemicals, and financial services. The 1987 leveraged buyout broke up that structure; the company re-emerged publicly in 1993 as a dedicated automotive component maker.
Acquisitions in the late 1990s, including a German turbocharger business, built what became the company's signature franchise. Turbocharger demand surged as automakers downsized engines, and BorgWarner became one of the two largest turbo suppliers globally. Its DualTronic dual-clutch transmission work with Volkswagen added a second pillar.
In October 2020 the company completed its approximately $3.3 billion acquisition of Delphi Technologies, gaining power electronics, inverters, and fuel systems. In July 2023 it spun off the fuel systems and aftermarket operations as PHINIA, a separate public company, and focused the BorgWarner brand on propulsion technology.
In 2025 and 2026 the brand extended beyond vehicles for the first time in its modern form, winning a supply award for a turbine generator system aimed at the AI data center power market.
