History of SquareTrade

  • Founded: 1999
  • Founders: Steve Abernethy, Ahmed Khaishgi
  • Acquired by The Allstate Corporation: 2017

Steve Abernethy and Ahmed Khaishgi founded SquareTrade in San Francisco in 1999. The company entered the market at a moment when consumer electronics purchases were moving online and retailers were aggressively attaching extended warranties, often with poor claims experiences. SquareTrade's pitch was simple: cheaper plans, transparent terms, and a claims process handled online rather than through mailed paperwork and phone queues.

The company won early distribution deals with eBay and later expanded into brick-and-mortar retail. Its claims model depended on technology: automated adjudication, prepaid shipping labels, and a "five-day service guarantee" that promised repair, replacement, or reimbursement within five business days. That speed claim became central to the brand's marketing and was backed by a payout promise when the guarantee was missed.

Through the 2000s and early 2010s, SquareTrade raised venture funding from investors including Bain Capital Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Amadeus Capital Partners. It grew to cover smartphones, tablets, laptops, appliances, and eventually furniture and other retail categories. By the mid-2010s, it counted Costco, Sam's Club, and Amazon among its retail partners, and it had expanded into Europe with operations in the United Kingdom.

The Allstate acquisition closed in January 2017. Under Allstate, SquareTrade became the operational foundation of Allstate Protection Plans, scaling distribution to additional retailers and geographies. The SquareTrade name remained on some consumer-facing channels, including squaretrade.com and select partner programs, while "Allstate Protection Plans" became the primary go-to-market brand for new retail partnerships.

In the years since the acquisition, the business expanded into mobile device protection through carrier and operator partnerships, furniture and home protection, and international markets across Europe and Asia-Pacific. In FY2025, Allstate's Protection Plans reporting line, which reflects the SquareTrade operation, generated approximately $2.3 billion in annual revenue.

About The Allstate Corporation

What does The Allstate Corporation own?
Allstate owns a group of property-casualty insurance and consumer protection brands. Its insurance brands include Allstate, National General, Direct Auto, Encompass, and Answer Financial. Its protection services include Allstate Protection Plans (powered by SquareTrade), Allstate Roadside, Allstate Identity Protection, and Arity, a telematics data subsidiary. The company previously owned Esurance and a life insurance business, both of which it has retired or sold.

Is Allstate publicly traded?
Yes. The Allstate Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ALL and is a component of the S&P 500. It became a public company in 1993 when Sears sold approximately 20% of the company in what was then the largest US IPO. Sears distributed the remaining shares to its stockholders in 1995.

Who founded Allstate?
Allstate was founded inside Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1931. Robert E. Wood, then a senior Sears executive who later became its president and chairman, championed the idea of selling auto insurance through the Sears catalog. The brand was named after a line of Sears automobile tires.

Where is Allstate headquartered?
Allstate is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago. The company has had its corporate campus there since 1967. Allstate operates nationally in the United States and has operations in Canada, India, and Northern Ireland.

How many brands does Allstate own?
Allstate operates roughly eight to ten consumer-facing and business brands. The core set includes Allstate, National General, Direct Auto, Answer Financial, Encompass, Allstate Protection Plans (SquareTrade), Allstate Roadside, Allstate Identity Protection, and Arity. The Esurance brand has been retired as a standalone offering.

Who owns Allstate?
Allstate is an independent public company with no controlling shareholder. Its shares are owned by a broad base of institutional and retail investors, with the largest positions typically held by Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. It is not owned by Sears; Sears fully separated from Allstate in 1995.

Has Allstate made major acquisitions recently?
Yes. Allstate acquired SquareTrade for approximately $1.4 billion in January 2017 and National General for approximately $4 billion in January 2021. On the sell side, it sold its life insurance business to Everlake Life in 2021 for approximately $2.8 billion and completed the sale of its employer voluntary benefits and group health businesses in 2025.

What is Allstate's revenue?
Allstate reported FY2025 revenue of $67.7 billion, up 5.6% from FY2024. Net income was $10.2 billion and adjusted net income was $9.3 billion. The company had 210.9 million policies in force as of the fourth quarter of 2025.

SquareTrade Recalls & Controversies

SquareTrade and the extended warranty category generally have drawn recurring consumer complaints about claim denials, repair turnaround times, and plan terms. Complaint volume is visible on the Better Business Bureau and consumer forums, concentrated on disputes over whether damage is covered and on repair quality for refurbished or remanufactured replacements. No systemic regulatory finding has invalidated the business model, and Allstate discloses the operation as a regulated insurance product.

As part of Allstate, the business also sits inside the compliance framework of a large insurer, including state insurance department oversight of its protection plan products. Litigation affecting the parent, including the 2025 Texas Attorney General action over telematics data practices at sibling subsidiary Arity, does not directly involve SquareTrade's products but reflects the regulatory environment of the broader corporate family.

SquareTrade Ownership: Pros & Cons

Advantages

  • +Access to Allstate's underwriting capacity and balance sheet supports large retail program contracts
  • +Distribution through major national retailers gives the brand reach independent of insurance agent channels
  • +Claims infrastructure benefits from Allstate's scale and technology investment
  • +Protection plan economics diversify Allstate away from catastrophe-exposed property risk

Considerations

  • -Brand visibility has declined as programs shift to Allstate Protection Plans branding
  • -Extended warranty products carry persistent consumer complaint volume around claims denials and repair quality
  • -Competes against Asurion and Assurant, both of which hold entrenched retail and carrier relationships
  • -As a regulated insurance product, plan terms and pricing face state-level oversight that limits flexibility
