History of Overture
- Founded: 1994
- Founders: Don Williams
Overture was first released in 1994 by Don Williams as a professional music notation software. The software was developed to address the limitations of existing notation programs like Finale, which offered powerful features but had complex user interfaces, and Encore, which was user-friendly but lacked advanced notation capabilities.
When Overture was released, it introduced innovative features including a fully editable WYSIWYG page view where all notational elements could be entered or edited directly, contrasting with Finale's multiple editing modes. The software also combined features from Williams' earlier projects: the score interface resembled Encore, while the MIDI data editing view resembled the piano-roll view of Master Tracks Pro.
Overture was originally published by Opcode Systems, a company that produced MIDI sequencing and digital audio software. After Opcode ceased product development in 1999 following acquisition by Gibson Brands, Overture found a new publisher in Cakewalk, which published the software from 1999 to 2001.
In 2001, Don Williams' own company, GenieSoft (later renamed Sonic Scores), purchased Overture from Cakewalk. This acquisition was significant because it returned the software to its original developer, ensuring continued development and customer support. Greg Hendershott, CEO of Cakewalk at the time, noted that having Williams commit to continuing customer support and product enhancements was great news for customers.
Since 2001, Sonic Scores has continuously developed and maintained Overture, releasing regular updates that include improvements suggested by the user community. Later versions introduced features such as synchronized film/video playback, scrolling linear view for editing both notational elements and playback data, and support for plugins including Garritan instrument libraries and VST 3 support.
As of 2021, Overture is in version 5.6.3, with updates continuing to enhance functionality based on user feedback. Sonic Scores also markets Score Writer, a less expensive version with reduced features, and has developed the Amadeus Symphonic Orchestra sampled instrument library, which is compatible with Overture and other notation programs.

- -Overture faces strong competition from established notation programs with larger development teams and more extensive marketing budgets, potentially limiting market share growth
- -The rapid evolution of music technology and changing user preferences for integrated DAW-notation workflows may require significant development investment to maintain competitiveness
