Marsh traces its origin to 1871, when Henry W. Marsh established an insurance business in New York after observing how many insurers failed following the Great Chicago Fire. In 1905, Marsh partnered with Donald R. McLennan and Daniel W. Burroughs to form Burroughs, Marsh & McLennan in Chicago. When Burroughs retired in 1906, the firm became Marsh & McLennan.
The founders introduced a then-radical idea: the broker acts as a buyer of insurance on behalf of the client rather than as a seller of policies for the insurance company. That client-first positioning became the foundation of modern insurance broking and risk management. By 1917, the year the United States entered World War I, Marsh & McLennan operated offices across the country.
The firm incorporated in 1923 and made its first major acquisition that same year, absorbing Guy Carpenter & Company after founder Guy Carpenter met Marsh and McLennan on a transatlantic crossing. The firm went public in 1962. Through the second half of the twentieth century, Marsh grew into the dominant global broker, expanding into London, the world's most important insurance market, and building specialty practices in areas like aviation, marine, and financial lines.
In 2004, Marsh was at the center of the insurance industry's biggest scandal. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer alleged the firm rigged bids and steered clients to insurers that paid contingent commissions. Marsh settled for $850 million, eliminated contingent commissions, and replaced CEO Jeffrey Greenberg. The settlement reshaped broker compensation disclosure industry-wide.
Marsh McLennan Agency, the business serving middle-market clients in North America, was created in 2009 and expanded through dozens of regional agency acquisitions. In November 2024, the parent company completed its largest acquisition ever, buying McGriff Insurance Services for $7.75 billion and folding its 3,500-plus colleagues into Marsh McLennan Agency.
In October 2025, Marsh McLennan announced it would adopt Marsh as its single corporate masterbrand effective January 2026. The new identity, designed by the company's own Lippincott consultancy, debuted at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2026. The insurance broking business is now reported as Marsh Risk in financial statements, while the Marsh name also identifies the entire corporation.

Its New York Stock Exchange ticker changed from MMC to MRSH on January 14, 2026. The four businesses, Marsh, Guy Carpenter, Mercer, and Oliver Wyman, will transition to the Marsh masterbrand by 2027.

When was Marsh founded?
The company was founded in 1905 in Chicago as Burroughs, Marsh & McLennan by Henry W. Marsh, Donald R. McLennan, and Daniel W. Burroughs. It was renamed Marsh & McLennan in 1906. Henry Marsh's own insurance business dated to 1871.
Who founded Marsh & McLennan?
Henry W. Marsh and Donald R. McLennan founded the firm with Daniel W. Burroughs in 1905. Marsh and McLennan pioneered the concept of the broker acting as a buyer of insurance on behalf of the client rather than a seller for the insurance company.
What is Marsh's market position?
Marsh is the world's largest insurance broker by revenue, generating $27.0 billion in 2025. It outranks Aon, Arthur J. Gallagher, and Willis Towers Watson. Its Guy Carpenter unit is a leading reinsurance broker, and Oliver Wyman is a major management consultancy.
What happened to Marsh McLennan Agency?
Marsh McLennan Agency continues to operate as the company's middle-market insurance agency business in North America. It acquired McGriff Insurance Services for $7.75 billion in November 2024, significantly expanding its scale in commercial property and casualty, employee benefits, and personal lines.
Has Marsh faced any controversies?
The most significant was the 2004 bid-rigging investigation by the New York Attorney General, which resulted in an $850 million settlement, the end of contingent commissions, and a change of CEO. The current Thrive restructuring program has also drawn scrutiny for associated workforce reductions.
The defining controversy for Marsh remains the 2004 contingent commission scandal. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer alleged that Marsh steered business to insurers in exchange for market service agreement payments, a form of kickback that compromised its claimed client-first position. Marsh paid $850 million to settle without admitting wrongdoing, abolished contingent commissions, and replaced senior leadership including CEO Jeffrey Greenberg.
The scandal triggered industry-wide reform. Most major brokers abandoned contingent commissions, and compensation disclosure became standard practice. Marsh's recovery under subsequent leadership rebuilt its reputation, but the episode remains a reference point for conduct risk in insurance distribution.
The October 2025 rebrand and the associated Thrive program involve workforce restructuring and severance costs disclosed in the company's 2025 and 2026 financial results. Consolidation across the four businesses under one masterbrand has also raised internal and analyst questions about preserving the distinct reputations of Mercer, Guy Carpenter, and Oliver Wyman during the transition.
