Guy Carpenter entered the insurance business at age 15 and rose to manage the Cotton Insurance Association in Atlanta, organized in 1905. Insuring baled cotton, gins, and presses was essential to the economy of the American South, but rating practices were crude: a bad loss year drove the next year's premiums sharply higher, while a fortunate year pushed prices down and left insurers underprepared.
Carpenter developed what became known as the Carpenter Plan, basing rates on a rolling average of losses across multiple years rather than a single year's experience. The approach stabilized premiums without adding risk and represented an early application of data analytics to insurance pricing. When a 1922 New York legislative bill threatened non-admitted reinsurance, Carpenter's defenders, including leaders of Continental and Hartford Fire, helped defeat it.
Carpenter incorporated his namesake company in New York in 1922. The following year, the chance shipboard meeting with Henry Marsh and Donald McLennan led to its acquisition by Marsh & McLennan. Carpenter died suddenly in 1935 and was succeeded by George Nichols, who led the firm until 1963.
In 1939, with war approaching, Carpenter worked with Lloyd's to create the $40 million Lloyd's American Trust Agreement, reassuring American clients about the security of the London market. That episode cemented Guy Carpenter's position as the bridge between US insurers and global reinsurance capacity.
Through the postwar decades, Guy Carpenter expanded into property catastrophe, casualty, agriculture, and specialty reinsurance broking, and built the analytics businesses that distinguish it today. Its GC Securities unit provides insurance-linked securities and capital markets advisory, reflecting the growing convergence of reinsurance and capital markets.
In 2022 the firm marked its centennial. Under the October 2025 masterbrand announcement, Guy Carpenter will transition to the Marsh Re name beginning in 2027, though it remains the reinsurance reporting segment inside Marsh.
