Oliver, Wyman & Company was founded in New York in 1984 when six consultants left Booz Allen Hamilton to start their own firm. Two of the founders, Alexander Oliver and William Wyman, both Booz partners, gave the firm its name. Their premise was specialization: rather than attempting to advise all industries, the firm would concentrate on financial institutions at a time when competitors pursued generalist models.
The financial services focus proved durable. Through the 1990s, Oliver Wyman & Company built a reputation for deep industry expertise in banking, insurance, and capital markets. Bill Wyman left the firm in 1995, believing the human side of consulting was losing ground to analytical work, but the firm continued to grow.
Marsh & McLennan acquired Oliver, Wyman & Company in 2003 and merged it with Mercer Management Consulting and Mercer Delta, an organizational change consultancy acquired in 2000. The combination was initially branded Mercer Oliver Wyman. In 2007, the strategy consulting businesses were unified under the Oliver Wyman name, while the human resources consulting arm continued as Mercer.
The Oliver Wyman Group that emerged includes NERA Economic Consulting, which traces to 1961 and was acquired by Marsh & McLennan in 1983, and Lippincott, the brand and design consultancy acquired in 1986. The group's history involves repeated reorganizations, a complexity noted even by consulting industry chroniclers.
Ted Moynihan serves as Managing Partner and CEO. In October 2025, the parent announced that the operating unit would be renamed Marsh Management Consulting in reporting, while the client-facing brand becomes Oliver Wyman, a Marsh business, in 2027. Notably, the parent turned to its own Lippincott unit to design the new Marsh masterbrand unveiled at Davos in January 2026.
