History of Girona FC

  • Founded: 1930
  • Founders: Girona Football Club
  • Acquired by City Football Group: 2017

Girona FC was founded in 1930 and spent most of its history in the lower divisions of Spanish football. The club built a loyal regional following in Catalonia and developed a reputation for competitive football and community engagement in the Girona area.

City Football Group acquired the club in 2017, the same year Girona achieved promotion to La Liga for the first time. Under CFG ownership, Girona invested in player recruitment and facility development, establishing itself as a competitive top-flight club with access to CFG's global scouting network and player development resources.

The 2023-24 season was the most successful in club history. Girona finished third in La Liga with 81 points, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time. The club's attacking style under manager Michel drew widespread praise, and the campaign was regarded as one of the greatest overachievements in modern Spanish football.

The 2024-25 season saw Girona compete in the Champions League while struggling to maintain their domestic form. The increased demands of European competition and the loss of key players contributed to a difficult campaign.

In 2025-26, Girona fought against relegation throughout the season. On the final matchday, May 23, 2026, Girona needed a win against Elche to stay up but were held to a 1-1 draw, confirming their relegation to Segunda Division. The club finished 19th in La Liga with 41 points (9 wins, 14 draws, 15 losses, 39 goals for, 55 against), failing to win any of their last seven league matches. CFG chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak immediately pledged the group's commitment to returning Girona to the top flight.

For the 2024-25 financial year (ended June 30, 2025), CFG reported total revenue of £888 million, down from £933 million in 2023-24. The decline was primarily due to the deconsolidation of Girona FC. • La Liga Performance Recognition: The 2023-24 campaign, where Girona challenged for the title with 81 points, earned widespread recognition from football analysts and media as one of the greatest overachievements in modern Spanish football.
  • CFG Integration Success: Girona's successful integration into City Football Group's network has been recognized as exemplary club development, leveraging CFG resources while maintaining its Catalan identity.

Girona FC Recalls & Controversies

Multi-Club Ownership Scrutiny: CFG's multi-club ownership model has drawn regulatory scrutiny from UEFA regarding potential conflicts of interest, particularly when CFG clubs compete in the same European competitions.

Relegation After Champions League: Girona's relegation just two seasons after their historic Champions League qualification raised questions about the sustainability of smaller clubs competing at the highest level and the impact of European competition on squad depth and domestic performance.

Player Retention Challenges: The club's inability to retain key players after their successful 2023-24 campaign contributed to the decline that led to relegation, highlighting the financial gap between Girona and Spain's larger clubs.

Stadium Capacity Limitations: Estadi Montilivi's ~13,500 capacity limits revenue generation and has been cited as a constraint on the club's ability to compete financially with larger La Liga clubs.
