History of Cornetto
- Founded: 1959
- Founders: Spica ice cream company (Naples, Italy)
Cornetto was invented in 1959 by Spica, a Neapolitan ice cream manufacturer. The product concept, a wafer cone pre-filled with ice cream and sealed with a chocolate tip, was designed for industrial-scale production as a individually-wrapped grab-and-go ice cream.
Unilever's Italian subsidiary Algida acquired the rights to Cornetto and developed it into an international product. The brand's distinctive packaging and the concept of a "cornet" (Italian for cone, though also related to the musical instrument) became associated with summer treats across Europe.
In the UK, a long-running marketing campaign built strong consumer recognition for Cornetto. British film director Edgar Wright referenced the brand in his Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End).
