Asbury was formed in 1995 by Thomas F. Gibson, who consolidated a collection of regional dealerships into a single group just as public capital was entering US auto retail. The founding nameplates, Courtesy, Nalley, Coggin, McDavid, Plaza, Crown, and Hare, gave the company instant local credibility in their home markets. Asbury incorporated in Delaware and completed its IPO in March 2002.
Charles Oglesby led the company from 2007 through the 2008-2009 industry collapse, when auto sales fell to generational lows and dealership failures ran into the thousands. Craig Monaghan took over in 2014, tightening the portfolio through selective buying and selling. David Hult's appointment in 2018 opened the company's most acquisitive era: the Clicklane digital platform in 2020, the roughly $3.2 billion Larry H. Miller Dealerships acquisition in 2021, and the approximately $1.2 billion Jim Koons deal in 2023.
The July 21, 2025 completion of the Herb Chambers Companies acquisition, $1.45 billion for 33 dealerships, 52 franchises, and three collision centers across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, marked the group's entry into the Northeast and ranked among the largest dealership transactions in industry history. It pushed 2025 revenue to a record $18 billion.
Two technology programs defined 2026. Asbury completed a company-wide conversion to the Tekion cloud dealer management system in October 2026, the largest such deployment in the industry, and finished rolling out Total Care Auto, its proprietary F&I product brand, across every store. The company also pruned underperforming dealerships during the year, moving from 223 franchises to 197.
