History of Group 1 Automotive, Inc.
Group 1 was formed in 1997 through the consolidation of dealership groups owned by Bob Howard (Oklahoma City), Sterling McCall and Kevin Whalen (Houston), and Charles Smith (Beaumont, Texas). B. B. Hollingsworth served as founding chairman and CEO. The company completed its initial public offering on the NYSE in October 1997.
Growth came almost entirely through acquisition. Early purchases included the Gene Messer Automotive Group, Maxwell Auto Group, Ira Motor Group, and Bohn Auto Group, building a Sun Belt-heavy US footprint. Earl Hesterberg led the company from 2005 to 2022, during which it expanded into the UK market and built out the AcceleRide digital retail platform launched in 2019.
Daryl Kenningham became President and CEO in July 2023 after leading the US operations. Under his tenure the company accelerated portfolio churn: divesting weaker stores while buying higher-return franchises, and executing the transformational August 2024 purchase of Inchcape's UK retail business, which roughly doubled the UK presence.
FY2025 delivered record revenue of $22.6 billion and record gross profit of $3.6 billion. The company repurchased approximately 10.1% of its outstanding shares during the year and continued optimizing the portfolio, acquiring Mercedes-Benz of South Austin and Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead plus Lexus and Acura stores in Fort Myers.
Group 1 Automotive, Inc. Sustainability & Ethics
Group 1 publishes an annual Corporate Responsibility Report aligned to SASB and GRI frameworks, covering workforce, community, and environmental metrics for its dealership network.
The sustainability angle in auto retail is transitional: EV inventory and service readiness, collision repair materials handling, and facility energy use. The company's 2025 report tracks workforce metrics including reduced technician turnover, cited as a driver of service productivity.
Awards & Recognition
- Fortune 250: Group 1 is a Fortune 250 company by revenue.
- Record FY2025: Records across all major business lines and record parts and service gross profit.
Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny
Group 1 operates in a heavily franchised, regulated retail channel. Dealers face state franchise law, FTC retail rules, and UK FCA oversight on finance products.
Scrutiny has been routine rather than exceptional: F&I product pricing is an industry-wide regulatory focus, and the company periodically receives attention over dealership-level complaints common to high-volume auto retail. No major systemic controversy dominates its current profile.
