The company's most significant brand, Wimpy, was originally a US chain that was licensed to South African operators in the 1960s. Famous Brands acquired the South African Wimpy franchise rights and built it into one of the country's most recognized restaurant brands.

Steers, a flame-grilled burger chain, was acquired by Famous Brands and became one of its most successful brands, particularly in South Africa and other African markets. Debonairs Pizza was developed as a pizza delivery and takeaway concept targeting the South African market.

Famous Brands listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1994, providing capital to fund its expansion strategy. The company pursued an aggressive acquisition and brand development strategy through the 2000s and 2010s, adding Mugg and Bean, RocoMamas, and other brands to its portfolio.

In 2016, Famous Brands made its largest international acquisition, purchasing Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK), a UK-based premium burger chain, for approximately GBP 120 million.
