History of Spur Corporation Limited

Allen Ambor founded Spur Steak Ranches on October 24, 1967, when he opened the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town. Ambor, then 22 years old, had worked as a waiter at a steakhouse in Johannesburg while studying at Wits University. He borrowed money from his father and a business partner to fund the venture. The original restaurant featured a cowboy theme, with a golden spur as the logo. Ambor later changed the logo to the current Native American insignia in the mid-1980s.

The first restaurant was an immediate success. Ambor sold his first franchise four years after opening, establishing the franchise model that would drive Spur's growth. By the late 1980s, Ambor had added Panarottis Pizza Pasta and John Dory's Fish Grill Sushi to the portfolio.

Spur Corporation listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1986. Ambor served as executive chairman from the listing until his retirement in March 2019, after 51 years at the company. Mike Bosman succeeded him as non-executive chairman. Pierre van Tonder, who started as a junior store manager in 1982, took over as CEO before being succeeded by Val Nichas.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Spur expanded internationally, opening restaurants in Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and other African countries. The group also expanded into Australia. In 2014, Spur acquired RocoMamas, a fast-casual burger brand, diversifying beyond traditional sit-down dining.

In 2023, Spur Corporation acquired the Doppio Collection, which included franchised and company-owned restaurants, a bakery, and a central supply business. Doppio Collection contributed R709.9 million to total group restaurant sales in FY2025. This acquisition added the Doppio Zero brand and expanded the speciality dining portfolio.

For fiscal year 2025 (ended June 30, 2025), Spur reported group revenue of R3.86 billion, up 11.2% from FY2024. Profit before tax increased 17.5% to R401.7 million. The group traded through 724 restaurants in 14 countries at year-end, having opened 31 restaurants in South Africa and 15 internationally during the year.

In the first half of fiscal 2026 (six months to December 31, 2025), Spur continued its strong performance. Group revenue increased 8.5% to R2.2 billion, with profit before tax up 13.0% to R244.7 million. The group opened 29 restaurants in South Africa and 9 internationally, bringing the total to 753 outlets. The Spur brand was reintroduced into Lesotho with a new restaurant in Maseru in September 2025.
