History of Eagle Creek Holdings, LLC

The background starts with Eagle Creek's founders, Steve and Nona Barker. They established the travel gear company in the San Jacinto Mountains of California in 1975. Early products drew on backpack construction at a time when lightweight, organized luggage for independent travelers was a smaller category. The company developed backpacks, wheeled luggage, duffels, packing organizers, money belts, and security accessories.

VF Corporation acquired Eagle Creek in 2000. Under VF, the brand joined a large apparel and outdoor portfolio and gained distribution, sourcing support, and corporate systems. VF later reorganized its brands and separated the jeans business as Kontoor Brands in 2019. Eagle Creek remained in VF's active portfolio but was small relative to The North Face, Vans, and Timberland.

In June 2021, VF announced that it intended to retire Eagle Creek during the second half of the year. The decision formed part of VF's portfolio review and surprised retailers and long-time customers. Closing would have ended new product operations and created questions about warranties, inventory, and the value of a brand with nearly five decades of history.

Campbell was preparing to leave VF and proposed buying the business. VF announced the sale in September 2021. Industry reporting states that the transfer was effective September 3. The price was not disclosed. Campbell said the acquiring LLC was newly created and VF did not finance the transaction.

The purchase was an asset deal rather than a purchase of a stand-alone VF subsidiary's stock. Campbell described the acquired package as all of the intellectual property, most assets including inventory and receivables, and some liabilities. No VF employees transferred automatically with the deal. The new company therefore had to recruit a team, arrange systems, maintain retailer relationships, and continue warranty support while taking control of the products and trademarks.

That structure matters for historical liabilities. An asset buyer receives the items listed in the agreement and assumes only specified obligations, subject to applicable law. Eagle Creek Holdings did agree to support product warranties. It did not become VF Corporation or inherit ownership of VF's other brands.

After the acquisition, the company resumed product development from Steamboat Springs. It retained the established focus on durable travel packs, luggage, duffels, and packing accessories. Campbell told trade press that the business had funding to restart and was seeking conventional bank financing for growth. The company also maintained European activity, giving it a route back to international wholesale accounts.

In July 2023, Eagle Creek Holdings filed a Form D with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for a private equity offering. The filing reported a $5 million total offering and stated that the full amount had been sold to six investors. Form D is a notice of an exempt offering, not a public stock listing or an SEC endorsement. It also reported that about $2 million of gross proceeds was expected to repay debt owed to Campbell.

The filing names Campbell as president, chief executive officer, secretary, manager, executive officer, and director. John Vandemore is identified as chief financial officer, and Deven Clemens as a manager. Those disclosures show that other managers and investors participate in the company, even though Campbell remains the owner publicly associated with the acquisition.

By August 25, 2026, no later public transaction had placed Eagle Creek back under VF or another conglomerate. The company continued to operate the brand through eaglecreek.com. The current ownership record is therefore the 2021 independent buyer, informed by the 2023 financing disclosure, not the pre-2021 VF relationship.

Eagle Creek Holdings, LLC Sustainability & Ethics

Eagle Creek publishes material and impact claims for selected products, including recycled fabrics and PVC-free construction. Such claims should be read at product level because percentages and certifications can differ. Recycled content does not make production impact-free, and company materials are first-party disclosures unless supported by a named certification.

Repairability and warranty support are more concrete parts of the company's environmental case. Extending a bag's usable life can reduce replacement demand. The company continued warranty service after the VF sale, which protects customers whose products predate the current owner. Whether a specific claim qualifies depends on the warranty terms, product condition, and exclusions.

Supply-chain responsibility remains relevant because manufacturing is outsourced. The company must set vendor standards and monitor quality, labor, chemicals, and traceability through contracts and audits. As a private company, Eagle Creek Holdings publishes less group-level environmental data than VF did. Readers should not apply VF's current targets or emissions results to the independent company.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

Travel goods are subject to product safety, chemical, labeling, customs, and consumer-protection rules in each market. Warranty statements and environmental claims must also be accurate. The company must maintain controls over suppliers because a contracted factory's work becomes an Eagle Creek product offered by the US owner.

The 2023 Form D did not allege wrongdoing. It reported an exempt securities offering and included the required notice that the SEC had not necessarily reviewed or verified the information. Repayment of approximately $2 million of founder debt was disclosed as a use of proceeds, allowing investors to assess that related-party payment.

The 2021 transfer followed VF's plan to close the brand and did not include automatic employee transfers. That restart created operational risk, but it also preserved the trademark, products, and warranties. No major completed regulatory enforcement action against Eagle Creek Holdings was identified through August 25, 2026.
