Who Owns Reliant Energy?

Reliant Energy emerged from the restructuring of Houston Industries when Texas deregulated its electricity market in 2000, splitting the generation and retail functions of the incumbent utility. The Reliant name was applied to the competitive retail business created by the split.

The brand established itself as the dominant Texas retail electricity provider through the 2000s, building the largest customer base in the state's deregulated market through aggressive marketing and the incumbent advantage of Houston-area customer recognition.

NRG acquired Reliant Energy in 2009 for approximately $287 million in a deal that shifted the power generation company's business model toward retail customer relationships. The acquisition was transformational for NRG, establishing the retail-plus-generation model that defines the company today.

Under NRG, Reliant has maintained its position as the largest Texas retail electricity provider, competing against TXU Energy and other retail providers while benefiting from the parent's generation fleet that supplies the retail book.
