Arthur Jones developed Nautilus exercise machines around 1970. His cam-based resistance design changed the force curve through an exercise and became widely used in health clubs and strength-training facilities.
The brand moved through several corporate owners. Direct Focus acquired the Nautilus business in 2001 and renamed itself Nautilus, Inc. in 2003. That company later placed more emphasis on BowFlex, Schwinn home fitness, and JRNY.
In 2023, Nautilus, Inc. sold the Nautilus trademarks and related licenses as non-core assets. The company reported $10.5 million for the indefinite-lived intellectual property and about $13 million for the broader non-core asset package. It changed its name to BowFlex Inc. in November 2023.
The old corporation entered Chapter 11 in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech acquired BowFlex, Schwinn Fitness, JRNY, inventory, and operating assets. The Nautilus name had already been sold.
