Who Owns MotoGP?

MotoGP's commercial rights are controlled by MotoGP Sports Entertainment S.L., the Spanish company formerly named Dorna Sports. Liberty Media acquired an 84 percent interest in that company in July 2025 for a transaction value of approximately $3.1 billion. Management and prior owners retain 16 percent. The FIM remains MotoGP's sporting governing body, so commercial ownership and sporting regulation are separate.

History of MotoGP

  • Founded: 1949
  • Founders: Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme
  • Acquired by MotoGP Sports Entertainment S.L.: 2025

The motorcycle Grand Prix world championship began in 1949. Dorna acquired commercial rights in 1992 and introduced the MotoGP name for the premier class in 2002. Liberty announced its acquisition in 2024 and completed it after European Commission approval in July 2025.

The operating company changed its legal identity from Dorna Sports to MotoGP Sports Entertainment in 2026. Dorna is therefore a historical company name, not the best current legal identity.

About MotoGP Sports Entertainment S.L.

What does Dorna Sports own?

Dorna Sports holds the commercial rights to two major motorcycle racing properties: MotoGP (the premier class of motorcycle road racing, including the Moto2 and Moto3 support categories) and the World Superbike Championship. The company does not own the racing teams or circuits but manages the commercial aspects of the championships, including broadcast rights, sponsorship, race hosting agreements, and event production. Dorna was renamed MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group by Liberty Media in early 2026, though the Dorna name remains in operational use.

Is Dorna Sports publicly traded?

No. Dorna Sports is a private company, 84% owned by Liberty Media Corporation. Liberty Media trades on Nasdaq under the tickers FWONA and FWONK, and MotoGP's financial results are reported as part of Liberty's Formula One Group. The remaining 16% of Dorna is held by prior owners including management. Dorna itself does not have publicly traded shares.

Who founded Dorna Sports?

Dorna Sports was founded in 1988 in Madrid, Spain, as Dorna Promocion Deportiva. Carmelo Ezpeleta, who has led the company since its founding, built Dorna from a sports marketing agency into the commercial rights holder for MotoGP. Ezpeleta acquired the commercial rights to the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix in 1992 and rebranded it as MotoGP in 2002. He remains as CEO under Liberty Media ownership.

Where is Dorna Sports headquartered?

Dorna Sports is headquartered in Madrid, Spain. The company's offices in Madrid serve as the operational center for MotoGP and World Superbike Championship management, including commercial operations, media production, and event logistics. Dorna employs approximately 300 people, primarily based in Madrid, with additional staff working at race events globally across 18 countries.

How many brands does Dorna Sports own?

Dorna manages two primary motorsport properties: MotoGP and the World Superbike Championship. MotoGP includes three racing categories (MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3), while World Superbike Championship is a separate series for production-based motorcycles. These are sporting properties rather than consumer brands, and Dorna manages their commercial rights rather than owning them as trademarks in the traditional sense.

Who owns Dorna Sports?

Dorna Sports is 84% owned by Liberty Media Corporation, which acquired its stake in July 2025 for a total transaction value of $3.1 billion. Liberty Media, which also owns Formula 1, acquired Dorna through its Formula One Group. The remaining 16% is held by prior owners, including Dorna management. Carmelo Ezpeleta, the founder and CEO, retains a minority stake and continues to lead the company. Liberty Media is publicly traded on Nasdaq under the tickers FWONA and FWONK.

What is Dorna Sports' revenue?

Dorna reported 2025 revenue of $573 million with a profit of $54 million. In Q1 2026, MotoGP revenue was $94 million, up from $75 million in Q1 2025 on a pro forma basis, with a loss of $24 million. In Q2 2026, revenue was $170 million, down 2% on a pro forma basis, with operating income of $37 million and Adjusted OIBDA of $76 million, up 3%. For the first six months of 2026, revenue was $264 million, up 6%, with Adjusted OIBDA of $92 million, up 10%. Revenue is generated through race hosting fees, television and media rights, sponsorship and advertising, and hospitality.
