The Kyndryl brand is young, but the business behind it is not. Its operations descend from IBM's managed infrastructure services unit, part of IBM Global Technology Services, which for decades ran data centers, networks, and help desks for large enterprises under outsourcing contracts. As IBM pivoted toward hybrid cloud and software, the infrastructure unit's margins and strategic fit deteriorated.
In October 2020 IBM announced it would split, spinning the infrastructure business into a standalone company so IBM could focus on cloud and AI. The new entity got its name in April 2021: Kyndryl, a coined word built from "kinship" and "tendril," chosen to signal customer relationships and tentacular reach. The name drew ridicule from some commentators, a reception the company absorbed without changing course.
The separation completed on November 3, 2021, and Kyndryl began NYSE trading the next day under ticker KD. At launch it was the world's largest IT infrastructure services provider, with roughly 90,000 employees, more than 4,000 customers including 75 percent of the Fortune 100, and approximately $19 billion in annual revenue, much of it from declining legacy contracts.
Freedom from IBM let the brand do what it could not before: partner with IBM's competitors. Within months Kyndryl signed a premier global alliance with Microsoft, followed by Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services agreements, then partnerships with SAP, ServiceNow, Dell, Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, and Nvidia. In 2022 it launched the branded offerings that now define its identity: Kyndryl Bridge, an open integration and AI-driven service delivery platform; Kyndryl Vital, a co-creation design practice; and Kyndryl Consult, which folded years of advisory work into a named consulting business.
The financial story was harder. Legacy contract run-off pushed revenue down year after year, from $19 billion at the spin to $15.1 billion in fiscal year 2026. Management responded with the "three-A's" strategy of alliances, advanced delivery automation, and account expansion, plus workforce rebalancing that trimmed headcount from 90,000 toward 72,000. By fiscal year 2026 the company posted $198 million in net income, $2.7 billion in adjusted EBITDA, and $406 million in free cash flow, with $13.5 billion in new signings and growing demand for agentic AI and modernization work.

Revenue decline: The brand's central public criticism is commercial rather than regulatory. Revenue has fallen every year since the spin-off, reflecting both deliberate exits from unprofitable legacy contracts and slower new business. Management has framed this as a managed transition, and margins have improved, but the top line remains under scrutiny.
Workforce reductions: Kyndryl has conducted repeated rounds of job cuts and workforce rebalancing since 2022, reducing headcount from roughly 90,000 at launch to approximately 72,000. The reductions are part of its advanced delivery strategy, which substitutes automation for labor in routine operations.
Brand name reception: The invented name drew widespread criticism at its 2021 announcement, with industry commentators questioning the coinage and spelling. The company retained the brand regardless, and the criticism faded as operations normalized.
Accounting scrutiny: Kyndryl disclosed in 2024 that the SEC had requested information regarding its cash flow presentation in earlier periods. The company cooperated, restated certain cash flow classifications, and reported no material impact on its results.
