The Kelly-Springfield Tire Company was founded in Springfield, Ohio in 1894 and became one of the early American tire makers, producing solid and pneumatic tires for carriages and early automobiles. Its Cumberland, Maryland plant, opened in the 1920s, was for decades one of the largest tire factories in the world.
Goodyear acquired Kelly-Springfield in 1935 and ran it as a secondary brand for nearly a century, producing tires under the Kelly name at the Cumberland plant until that facility closed in 1987. The brand survived the closure as a value label built at other Goodyear factories.
In the modern portfolio Kelly holds the bottom rung of the three-tier Goodyear structure: Goodyear premium, Cooper mid-tier, Kelly value. The current range covers passenger car, light truck, and trailer applications under names like Edge, Safari, and the legacy Kelly-Springfield identity on some commercial lines.
