Who Owns Enfamil?
History of Enfamil
- Founded: 1959
- Founders: Mead Johnson
- Acquired by : 2017
Mead Johnson was founded in 1905 by Edward Mead Johnson, who had previously been a co-founder of Johnson & Johnson. Mead Johnson specialized in nutritional products from its founding and introduced Enfamil (short for "infant formula") in 1959. The product was formulated to closely approximate the nutritional composition of breast milk, using scientific research to develop the appropriate balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
Mead Johnson was acquired by Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1967. Bristol-Myers Squibb spun off Mead Johnson Nutrition as a publicly traded company in 2009. Reckitt acquired the standalone Mead Johnson Nutrition in 2017.
During the 2022 US infant formula shortage, caused primarily by the recall and closure of Abbott's Similac manufacturing facility, Enfamil benefited from significantly increased demand as consumers sought alternatives. Reckitt expanded production and gained US market share during the shortage period.
