British multinational consumer goods company that owns leading health, hygiene, and nutrition brands including Lysol, Dettol, Enfamil, Nurofen, and Durex.
Reckitt & Sons was founded in Hull, England in 1840 by Isaac Reckitt as a starch, black lead, and mustard business. Colman's, founded in 1814, merged with Reckitt in 1938 to form Reckitt & Colman. Benckiser NV, a German cleaning products company, merged with Reckitt & Colman in 1999 to create Reckitt Benckiser, subsequently rebranded as Reckitt in 2021.
The company's most transformative recent acquisition was the purchase of Mead Johnson Nutrition, the maker of Enfamil infant formula, in June 2017 for approximately $16.6 billion. This brought one of the two largest US infant formula brands into the Reckitt portfolio. However, Mead Johnson's growth slowed after the acquisition, and Reckitt explored selling the nutrition business without finding acceptable terms. The 2022 US infant formula shortage benefited Enfamil, which gained US market share while Abbott's Similac faced a recall-driven shortage.
Reckitt has committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2040 and net zero across its value chain by 2050. The company is investing in sustainable packaging and responsible sourcing of palm oil and other commodities. Reckitt faces ongoing scrutiny related to the marketing of infant formula in developing markets, a legacy issue that predates its ownership of Mead Johnson but carries forward under Reckitt's brand.
