History of Design Hotels

  • Founded: 1993
  • Founders: Claus Sendlinger
  • Acquired by Marriott International: 2016

Claus Sendlinger founded Design Hotels in 1993 in Germany, recognizing that a growing number of architecturally ambitious independent hotels needed collective marketing to reach international guests. The concept was a curated consortium: member hotels paid for distribution and marketing services while remaining fully independent.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Design Hotels built a reputation as the definitive collection of design-led properties, publishing annual hotel guides that functioned as design references in their own right. Membership became a quality signal: hotels curated into the community gained credibility with design-conscious travelers.

Starwood Capital, the investment firm related to but separate from Starwood Hotels, first invested in Design Hotels in 2011 and increased its stake over subsequent years. When Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 2016, it inherited the controlling interest in Design Hotels, eventually moving to full ownership in 2020.

Marriott's ownership created an unusual relationship: the world's largest hotel company owns a community explicitly built around anti-chain identity. Marriott has managed this by keeping Design Hotels operationally separate in Berlin, preserving its independent curation process, and integrating member hotels into Bonvoy only partially and optionally.

Under Marriott, the community has continued curating approximately 300 member properties across roughly 60 countries, with the brand's authority in design hospitality remaining intact.

Design Hotels Sustainability & Ethics

Design Hotels promotes sustainability through its member curation criteria, which increasingly weigh environmental design and operations. The community publishes content highlighting member hotels' sustainability practices, and its annual publications profile eco-conscious properties.

The brand operates under Marriott's Serve360 platform at the corporate level, though member hotels are independent and hold their own environmental standards and certifications.

Awards & Recognition

Design Hotels' annual hotel guide has long been regarded as a design reference, and the community presents awards recognizing member hotels across categories including architecture, community engagement, and new entries. The brand's curation itself functions as recognition: membership signals design quality to both travelers and the hospitality industry.
