Hub van Doorne founded DAF in Eindhoven in 1928, building trailers and then trucks before expanding into passenger cars. The company's innovative Variomatic continuously variable transmission distinguished it technically through the mid-twentieth century.
DAF grew into a significant European truck maker while its car business struggled and was eventually sold to Volvo in the 1970s, leaving the truck operation. The truck business itself faced financial difficulty in the early 1990s, entering bankruptcy proceedings before PACCAR's 1996 acquisition.
Under PACCAR the brand was rebuilt: investment in the Eindhoven facility and Leyland plant in the UK, development of the XF, XG, XG+, and XD heavy and medium models, and expansion into Brazil restored DAF to leading European market share.
The electric XF and XD each won International Truck of the Year 2026, a rare double for the brand that validated its zero-emission positioning as Europe's truck market transitions to electric regulation.
