History of AWAL

  • Founded: 1997
  • Founders: Denzyl Feigelson, Kevin Bacon, Jonathan Quarmby
  • Acquired by Sony Music Entertainment: 2022

AWAL began as Artists Without a Label and was built to distribute independent music digitally. Kobalt acquired the business in 2011 and expanded its data, royalty, and artist-services capabilities. Sony's purchase placed AWAL inside a major music group while retaining the name and its artist-facing proposition.

The acquisition date is sometimes misstated as 2016. Sony did not buy AWAL in 2016. The agreement was announced in 2021 and completed after regulatory clearance in 2022.
