The inMusic story starts before the name existed. In 1992 Jack O'Donnell purchased Numark Electronics, a DJ equipment manufacturer that had operated since the early 1970s. Under O'Donnell, Numark recovered and grew into one of the largest DJ equipment makers in the world, providing the template for everything that followed: buy an established audio brand, invest in product development, and scale it through shared infrastructure.
The acquisition run continued through the 2000s. O'Donnell bought Alesis in 2001, known for affordable effects and the groundbreaking ADAT digital recorder, then launched ION Audio for entry-level consumer audio. In 2005 the company acquired Akai Professional's musical instrument division, gaining the legendary MPC line. DJ software brand Mixmeister followed in 2007, and Alto Professional in 2010.
In 2012 O'Donnell consolidated the growing portfolio under the inMusic name, establishing inMusic Brands as the parent identity. That year the group added M-Audio, bringing both keyboard controllers and the AIR Music Technology software division with its VST instruments and plugins. Sonivox added another software instrument line.
April 2014 brought the largest expansion to that point: inMusic acquired Denon DJ, Denon Professional, and Marantz Professional from D&M Holdings, which retained the consumer hi-fi sides of those brands. Denon DJ became a direct competitor to Pioneer DJ in the professional DJ market. Rane, the respected DJ mixer manufacturer, joined in 2016, followed by HeadRush for guitar processors and Marq for lighting.
In June 2023 inMusic acquired Moog Music, the iconic synthesizer company founded by Bob Moog, in a deal that moved the Asheville, North Carolina operation under the inMusic umbrella. Then in May 2026 the company announced a definitive agreement to acquire Native Instruments, the Berlin music software company behind Kontakt, Komplete, and Traktor, The deal, completed June 30, 2026, followed Native Instruments' entry into preliminary insolvency proceedings in January 2026 under private equity owner Francisco Partners. The former group was split: inMusic kept the core business, while iZotope went to Boris FX and Plugin Alliance and Brainworx returned to founder Dirk Ulrich's RCKFRC group.
What is inMusic?
inMusic Brands, Inc. is a private American music technology company headquartered in Cumberland, Rhode Island. It owns a family of brands including Akai Professional, Numark, Denon DJ, Rane, Alesis, M-Audio, Moog, and Native Instruments, covering DJ gear, instruments, pro audio, and music software.
Is inMusic publicly traded?
No. inMusic is private and controlled by founder and CEO Jack O'Donnell. It does not publish financial statements, though revenue is privately estimated around $400 million and it employs roughly 430 people globally.
When was inMusic founded?
The inMusic corporate identity was established in 2012, but the business traces to Jack O'Donnell's 1992 acquisition of Numark Electronics. The portfolio grew steadily through acquisitions before being consolidated under the inMusic name.
Who owns inMusic?
Jack O'Donnell founded, owns, and runs inMusic as CEO. There are no private equity shareholders or outside controlling investors. All acquisitions, including Moog in 2023 and Native Instruments in 2026, were privately financed and negotiated.
What is inMusic's market position?
inMusic is one of the largest music technology companies globally. It leads in DJ hardware volume through Numark and Denon DJ, owns iconic synthesizer maker Moog, and in 2026 acquired Native Instruments to become a dominant force in music production software as well.
Does inMusic own Native Instruments and Moog?
Yes. inMusic acquired Moog Music in June 2023 and completed the acquisition of the core Native Instruments business on June 30, 2026. The former group's other assets were split off: iZotope went to Boris FX, and Plugin Alliance and Brainworx were reacquired by founder Dirk Ulrich's RCKFRC group.
inMusic's documented controversies relate mostly to how it has managed acquired brands rather than product safety.
Roger Linn, the legendary instrument designer behind the LinnDrum, publicly stated that after inMusic's 2005 acquisition of Akai Professional, the company stopped paying royalties owed to him under his MPC-related agreements and responded with legal threats when he sought to collect them. The dispute was never resolved in Linn's favor and remains a noted grievance in the industry.
The company also drew criticism for abandoning Mixmeister after acquiring the DJ software brand in 2007. Development ceased after version 7.7.1 in 2015, leaving paying customers without updates, though the product remained on sale through Numark for a period.
The 2023 Moog acquisition and the 2026 Native Instruments deal both generated anxiety in their user communities about potential product discontinuation and support quality, concerns that were amplified by Native Instruments' January 2026 preliminary insolvency filing under its previous owner. inMusic committed to maintaining Native Instruments products and support following the acquisition, though the group's split, which sent iZotope to Boris FX and Plugin Alliance and Brainworx back to their founder, created transition complexity for shared services.
