History of Aon

  • Founded: 1982
  • Founders: Patrick Ryan, W. Clement Stone

The name comes from the Gaelic word for one, adopted in 1987 by the company formed from the 1982 merger of Ryan Insurance Group and Combined International. The brand replaced a collection of acquired agency names as the firm consolidated under Patrick Ryan.

Major expansion came through acquisition: Alexander & Alexander's brokerage operations in 1997, Benfield's reinsurance business in 2008, and Hewitt Associates in 2010. The 2024 NFP acquisition added middle-market reach. A blocked $30 billion merger with Willis Towers Watson in 2021 remains the brand's biggest regulatory setback.
