Furniture Brand Ownership: Who Makes Your Furniture?
IKEA, Herman Miller, La-Z-Boy, and Ashley Furniture are owned by different corporate structures. Discover who controls the furniture industry, from foundations to public companies. Explore our database.
Your IKEA bookshelf and your Herman Miller office chair come from completely different corporate worlds. One is owned by a Dutch foundation that cannot be acquired. The other belongs to a publicly traded American company that also owns Knoll, Design Within Reach, and HAY. The furniture industry is a mix of foundation-owned giants, public corporations, and private family businesses, each with a fundamentally different reason for existing.
We analysed the ownership structures of the biggest furniture brands to show you who controls what, and why the corporate structure behind your furniture matters more than you might expect.
IKEA: The Foundation-Owned Giant
IKEA is the largest furniture retailer in the world, and it cannot be bought. The company's ownership structure is deliberately designed to prevent any acquisition or takeover.
Here is how it works:
- Stichting INGKA Foundation owns Ingka Group, which operates most IKEA stores worldwide. Ingka Group reported FY25 revenue of €41.5 billion and net profit of €1.4 billion. The foundation has no owners and no beneficial shareholders. Nobody is entitled to its assets.
- Interogo Foundation in Liechtenstein owns Inter IKEA Group, which owns the IKEA concept, brand, and intellectual property. Inter IKEA Group reported FY25 total revenues of €26.3 billion.
- Franchise system: Ingka Group pays a 3% franchise fee to Inter IKEA Systems B.V. for the right to operate IKEA stores. There are 13 franchisee groups operating over 800 IKEA customer meeting points worldwide.
- Profit distribution: 85% of Ingka Group's net profit is reinvested in the company. 15% goes to the INGKA Foundation, which has a charitable purpose and provides funding to the IKEA Foundation.
Total IKEA retail sales across all franchisees were €44.6 billion in FY25. The company was founded in Sweden in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad and has over 200,000 employees. Ingka Group also owns TaskRabbit, acquired in 2017.
Juvencio Maeztu succeeded Jesper Brodin as CEO and President of Ingka Group in 2026. The company's FY26 commercial activities will focus on kitchen and dining products, starting with the launch of the low-price KNOXHULT kitchen series.
MillerKnoll: The Design Powerhouse
MillerKnoll (NASDAQ: MLKN) is the result of Herman Miller's $1.8 billion acquisition of Knoll in July 2021. The combined company is one of the largest and most influential modern design companies in the world.
MillerKnoll reported full fiscal year 2026 results (ended May 30, 2026) with net sales of $3.84 billion, up 4.7% from $3.67 billion in FY2025. Q4 FY2026 net sales were $1.00 billion, up 4.4% year over year.
The MillerKnoll brand portfolio:
| Brand | Category | Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Herman Miller | Office furniture | Founded 1905, Zeeland MI |
| Knoll | Office furniture | Founded 1938, New York |
| Design Within Reach | Retail | Acquired 2014 for $154M |
| HAY | Contemporary design | Danish brand |
| Muuto | Scandinavian design | Norwegian brand |

CEO Andi Owen leads the combined company. MillerKnoll operates 93 retail stores across DWR, Herman Miller, and other brands, totalling 577,366 square feet of selling space as of Q4 FY2026. The company has $1.31 billion in long-term debt as of May 31, 2025.
MillerKnoll's three reportable segments are North America Contract, International Contract, and Global Retail. The North America Contract segment includes operations for office, healthcare, and educational environments in the US and Canada, plus the global operations of Spinneybeck/FilzFelt, Maharam, Edelman, and Knoll Textiles.
La-Z-Boy: Vertically Integrated American Heritage
La-Z-Boy (NYSE: LZB) is approaching its 100-year anniversary in 2027. Founded in 1927, the company is a global leader in residential furniture retail and manufacturing.
Key financial data for fiscal year 2026 (ended April 25, 2026):
- Full year sales: $2.13 billion, up 1% from $2.11 billion
- Q4 sales: $570 million, flat year over year
- Q4 operating margin: 7.2% GAAP, 9.9% adjusted
- Full year operating margin: 6.1% GAAP, 7.1% adjusted
La-Z-Boy owns 230 of the 378 La-Z-Boy stores across North America, an all-time high of 61% of the total network. The company added 15 new stores and acquired 15 independent stores in fiscal 2026, both the largest annual expansions in company history. The company plans to open 10 new stores per year to grow to 450 locations.
The company also owns Joybird, a direct-to-consumer retailer of modern, custom upholstered furniture with 15 US stores. Joybird's delivered sales decreased 10% to $32 million in Q4 FY2026 on lower delivered volume, though written sales increased 2% driven by new retail stores.
La-Z-Boy completed the sale of its American Drew and Kincaid wholesale casegoods businesses to Banner House on June 1, 2026, to focus on its core vertically integrated North American upholstery business. Approximately 90% of La-Z-Boy's products are produced in North America. The company was named to TIME's 2026 list of America's Most Iconic Companies and ranked No. 1 in the furniture category on Newsweek's 2025 list of America's Best Retailers.
CEO Melinda D. Whittington stated: "We continue to drive our own momentum and are playing offense, led by our Retail business expansion through new stores, acquisition of independent stores, and delighting consumers across our network."
Other Major Players
The furniture industry extends well beyond IKEA, MillerKnoll, and La-Z-Boy:
- Steelcase (NYSE: SCS) is the largest office furniture maker in the world. The Michigan-based company manufactures and sells furniture for office, healthcare, and educational environments globally.
- Ashley Furniture Industries is privately held and is the world's largest home furniture manufacturer. The company sells through a network of independent retailers and Ashley HomeStore locations.
- Haworth is a privately held, family-owned company based in Holland, Michigan. It manufactures office furniture and workspace solutions.
- HNI Corporation (NYSE: HNI) manufactures office furniture and hearth products. The company operates through two segments: Workplace and Residential.
- Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM) owns Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Williams-Sonoma. While primarily a retailer, these brands design and source their own furniture lines. Williams-Sonoma is a significant player in the furniture and home goods market.
What This Means for Consumers
The ownership structure of your furniture brand affects you in ways you might not consider:
- Foundation vs public vs private: IKEA's foundation structure means it cannot be acquired, liquidated, or forced to prioritise short-term shareholder returns. MillerKnoll's public listing means quarterly earnings pressure. La-Z-Boy's century of family leadership provides continuity. Each structure creates different incentives that shape product quality, pricing, and innovation.
- Design heritage under corporate umbrellas: When Herman Miller acquired Knoll, two of the most important design histories in American furniture came under one roof. The Aeron chair and the Barcelona chair are now made by the same company. Whether this consolidation helps or hurts design innovation depends on how much autonomy each brand retains.
- Quality implications: La-Z-Boy produces 90% of its products in North America. IKEA's foundation structure lets it reinvest 85% of profits back into the business. These choices directly affect the product you buy.

FAQ
Who owns IKEA?
IKEA is owned by two foundations. Stichting INGKA Foundation in the Netherlands owns Ingka Group, which operates most IKEA stores. Interogo Foundation in Liechtenstein owns Inter IKEA Group, which owns the IKEA concept and brand. Neither foundation has private shareholders. The structure prevents any acquisition or takeover.
Are Herman Miller and Knoll the same company?
Yes. Herman Miller acquired Knoll for $1.8 billion in July 2021, forming MillerKnoll (NASDAQ: MLKN). Both brands continue as distinct brands within the combined company. MillerKnoll's portfolio also includes Design Within Reach, HAY, Muuto, and several other design brands.
Is La-Z-Boy American-owned?
Yes. La-Z-Boy (NYSE: LZB) is headquartered in Monroe, Michigan and was founded in 1927. The company is publicly traded and produces approximately 90% of its products in North America. It was named to TIME's 2026 list of America's Most Iconic Companies.
Who owns Pottery Barn?
Pottery Barn is owned by Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM). The company also owns West Elm and the Williams-Sonoma brand. While Williams-Sonoma is primarily a retailer, these brands design and source their own furniture and home goods lines.
Conclusion
The furniture industry is unusual because its biggest player, IKEA, is structurally immune to acquisition. MillerKnoll represents the consolidation model, where two historic design brands merged to create scale. La-Z-Boy shows the value of vertical integration and century-long family heritage. And private companies like Ashley Furniture and Haworth operate at massive scale without any public disclosure requirements. When you buy furniture, the corporate structure behind the brand determines how it is priced, how it is made, and how long it will survive.
