Kitchen Appliance Brand Ownership: Who Really Makes Your Appliances?
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, GE, Bosch, and LG are owned by just 5 companies. Discover who really makes your kitchen appliances and why brand names don't tell the full story. Explore our database.
Your Whirlpool refrigerator and your Maytag washer are made by the same company. Your GE oven is now made by a Chinese multinational. Your Bosch dishwasher comes from a privately held German engineering group. The kitchen appliance industry is concentrated in the hands of five parent companies, and the brand name on the front of your appliance often tells you less than you think about who actually built it.
We traced the ownership of every major kitchen appliance brand to show you where your money goes when you buy a refrigerator, oven, or dishwasher.
Whirlpool Corporation: The American Portfolio
Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR) is the only major US-based manufacturer of kitchen and laundry appliances. Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the company reported 2025 net sales of approximately $15.5 billion, with close to 90% of revenue from the Americas. Whirlpool employs 41,000 people and operates 35 manufacturing and technology research centers.
Whirlpool's brand portfolio:
| Brand | Position | Market |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | Mainstream | Global |
| KitchenAid | Premium | Global |
| Maytag | Durable/value | North America |
| JennAir | Luxury | North America |
| Amana | Value | North America |
| InSinkErator | Garbage disposers | Global |
| Brastemp | Mainstream | Brazil |
| Consul | Value | Brazil |
The company says 80% of the major appliances it sells in the US come from US factories. Whirlpool launched the most new products in over a decade in 2025 and plans approximately 100 new product launches in 2026, including the KitchenAid Artisan Plus Stand Mixer and the Whirlpool Laundry Tower. The company recently announced a $300 million investment in US laundry operations, creating 400-600 new jobs across its Clyde and Marion, Ohio facilities.
Whirlpool's 2025 was a difficult year. The company reported a $381 million impairment charge on the Maytag trademark in 2024 and a further $10 million impairment in 2025. The Maytag brand, once synonymous with durable American appliances, has lost significant brand value. Whirlpool also reduced its ownership stake in Whirlpool of India from a majority position to approximately 40%, generating a $251 million gain.
For 2026, Whirlpool is guiding to like-for-like revenue growth of approximately 5% and ongoing EBIT margin expansion to between 5.5% and 5.8%.
GE Appliances: Now a Haier Company
GE Appliances is no longer a General Electric company. Haier acquired GE Appliances in 2016 for $5.4 billion. The acquisition was one of the largest Chinese acquisitions of a US consumer brand, and it transferred one of America's most recognised appliance brands to Chinese ownership.
GE Appliances' brand portfolio:
- GE - the mainstream brand
- GE Profile - premium tier
- Café - design-focused premium
- Monogram - luxury built-in
- Hotpoint - value tier
- Haier - Haier-branded appliances in the US
- Fisher & Paykel - New Zealand premium brand (acquired by Haier in 2012)
GE Appliances calls itself "America's #1 Appliance Company" and says its products are used in half of American homes. The company has 15,500 team members and is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Haier has invested over $2 billion in GE Appliances since the 2016 acquisition.
The Haier-GE deal is a case study in cross-border brand acquisition. Haier kept the GE brand name, maintained US manufacturing, and invested in the business rather than stripping assets. The approach has been broadly successful, with GE Appliances gaining market share under Haier ownership.

BSH Hausgerate: The German Premium Player
BSH Hausgerate GmbH is a subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, the privately held German engineering and technology company. BSH is the largest home appliance manufacturer in Europe.
BSH's brand portfolio:
- Bosch - mid-market to premium appliances
- Thermador - professional-style cooking appliances for the US market
- Gaggenau - ultra-premium built-in appliances
BSH positions its brands across distinct price tiers. Bosch covers the mid-market to premium segment. Thermador targets the pro-style cooking segment, competing with Wolf and Viking. Gaggenau sits at the ultra-premium level, with built-in appliances that can cost as much as a luxury car.
Robert Bosch GmbH is a private company owned by the Robert Bosch Stiftung foundation, which holds 92% of the share capital. This foundation ownership structure is similar to IKEA's, providing long-term stability and preventing hostile takeovers.
LG and Samsung: The Korean Challengers
LG Electronics and Samsung entered the US appliance market later than Whirlpool, GE, and Bosch, but they have gained significant market share through design innovation and feature differentiation.
- LG - mainstream appliances (refrigerators, laundry, ranges, dishwashers)
- LG Signature - ultra-premium line
- Signature Kitchen Suite - luxury built-in appliances
- Samsung - mainstream appliances
- Bespoke - design-led customizable appliance line
Both Korean companies rode into the US market on design and features. LG pioneered the French-door refrigerator format. Samsung introduced the Family Hub refrigerator with a built-in touchscreen. Both companies have invested heavily in US manufacturing, with LG opening a factory in Clarksville, Tennessee and Samsung opening a facility in Newberry, South Carolina.
Electrolux Group: The European Giant
Electrolux Group is a Swedish multinational and one of the largest appliance manufacturers in the world. The company's brand portfolio includes:
- Electrolux - premium European brand
- AEG - German premium brand
- Frigidaire - US value brand
Frigidaire is Electrolux's US brand, positioned in the value-to-mid-market segment. The Electrolux brand itself is positioned as premium European. AEG targets the German premium segment.
Electrolux has faced challenges in the US market. The company acquired GE's appliance business in 2014 for $3.3 billion but was blocked by US antitrust regulators. The failed acquisition cost Electrolux $175 million in breakup fees and left the company without the US scale it was seeking.
What This Means for Consumers
Kitchen appliance ownership affects you in several practical ways:
- Shared platforms and parts: Whirlpool makes Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana appliances. Some internal components, motors, and control boards are shared across these brands even though the exteriors and price points differ. A $500 Amana washer and a $1,200 KitchenAid washer may share more parts than you expect.
- Private-label manufacturing: Some store-brand appliances are manufactured by the major players. The brand on the appliance may not be the company that built it.
- Brand reputation vs ownership changes: GE Appliances was a General Electric brand for over 100 years. Since 2016, it has been a Haier company. The brand name has not changed, but the corporate parent has. This matters for warranty service, parts availability, and long-term product support.
- Warranty and service networks: When you buy a Bosch dishwasher, you are buying into BSH's service network. When you buy a GE refrigerator, you are buying into Haier's service network. The quality of after-sales support depends on the parent company's investment in local service infrastructure.
