History of Tencent Holdings Limited

Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998 and launched QQ messaging soon afterward. It listed in Hong Kong in 2004. The company expanded from communications into games, payments, advertising, cloud computing, music, and video.

Tencent acquired a majority interest in Riot Games in 2011 and the remaining shares in 2015. It acquired control of Miniclip in 2015. These transactions made Tencent an important ultimate owner behind globally recognized gaming operations.

Controversy, Regulation & Public Scrutiny

Tencent operates under Chinese rules covering game approvals, youth play limits, data, and platform conduct. Overseas investments have also drawn national-security and competition scrutiny. These reviews have not changed Tencent's current ownership of Riot Games or control of Miniclip.
